Does it make any sense at all?!

Greetings all! I am new on the forum. I have become VERY interested in this little....hobby? I guess to me it would be just that. My question is; I quit cigarettes cold turkey on my 50th birthday (I'm 56 I think) after easily 35 years smoking. I don't miss it. Never did. That said, if the Dr. told me I had 6 months to live, I'd take out a loan and buy a carton of Marlboro Lights. I enjoyed it, I just don't miss it.

These devices you guys are hittin' just look awesome. I got a real strong desire to dive in. Most of what I've read deals with folks trying to quit or wanting to. Does it make sense for a non-smoker to jump in? If you had kicked the habit (smoking) successfully, would you do it?

I am a tech nut (geek?) and these things just look so sexy with all the metal and glass coolness. I think I'd want one, or a bunch, even if I didn't use them.

Advise away...and thanks!

Hi

You're an ex-smoker - there's a difference. I know people who quit the hard way and years later they still have cravings to smoke. For anyone in that position turning to vaping makes perfect sense, rather than relapsing into smoking. Beyond that, as an adult it's entirely up to you. If you don't feel a need to prevent a smoking relapse though I don't see the point to vaping on a "just because" basis.

Yeah, I don't foresee danger of relapse. I don't 'crave' the chemicals. But I do sometimes miss the motion of smoking. The social part has changed drastically in the last few years and will continue to. Hell, I've actually learned to enjoy beer without a cigarette. You're absolutely right that doing it 'just because' is pointless. Then again most of the stuff I do is 'just because'!!

I love the tinkering, tech, and collecting aspects also. I started vaping to stop smoking. Im going on 2 month now, analog free. I have jumped into vaping head first. All of the shiny metal, killer designs, one off productions. Its a collectors dream. The high end hand made mechs are truly pieces of art. So I totally understand how someone could get into vaping solely for the tech/collecting aspects of it. I mean this stuff really is freaking cool! Ya, know?

I started vaping to quit and my wife actually asks me to make her some juice because she enjoys the taste of some of the ones i'm making, all 0mg for her since she's never been a smoker i keep one or two tanks of sweet or candy juices around for her because she likes them. And with the drinking a beer part i've come to love vaping a slightly more sour liquid when drinking IPA's. Most specifically Red Bull flavoring, which actually tastes identical to sweet tarts. And the tech side of this hobby is awesome i'm actually making a box mod out of the old Blu pack i had when i first got into e-cigarettes. What a POS those Blu's were.

I didn't start vaping to quit smoking. I started because it was more enjoyable for me than smoking..cigarettes. When I first started vaping I was still smoking. Every time I'd finish a cigarette, I'd immediately pick up my mod and vape. I soon decided that I started to actually hate cigarettes, and I stopped smoking them unintentionally.

If you're a tech nut, heck yes! I enjoy vaping and appreciate the fact that it helped me to give up smoking but I love messing around with the equipment. Coils, tanks, mods, it's never ends. When I get bored, I mess around with my set-ups. If you're comfortable around PCB's and soldering, buy a DNA20 or Nivel board a build your own one-off mod. We even have our own sub forum.
I don't know if I will Vape forever but I will certainly build mods and test them out.

Hello Speed King. As you can see we live about twenty miles apart.

My wife and I stopped using analog cigarettes July 1st when the new tobacco tax went into effect, switching to e cigs. As you are probably aware, Minnesota's current outlook with regard to vaping is the same as that of analog cigarettes. So, moving to vaping has the same restrictions. Politics! One thing you may want to take into consideration is the fact that e-juices with 0mg nicotine are readily available. So, if you really want to investigate the technical side and keep your hands busy, delve in.

Thanks for the great advice all. The tech part is most likely gonna be the hook. I love to get into things with both feet. I like coffee so I started buying green beans from all over the planet. I modded up my own small batch roaster and roasted my own. (If you love coffee, you won't believe the difference, but that's another story).

Yeah, I see no reason to restart the Nicotine habit. Although, it's good to know also that it's not the dangerous part of a smoking habit. I might just go with the
eGo 650mAh w/ CE4 Clearomizer Blister Pack Starter Kit - MyFreedomSmokes.com
as a jumping in point. Looks like a pretty popular first choice, and that's always a good place to start. I'll pick one up for the daughter's boyfriend too. He's got a bunch of the Blu's laying around so that ain't workin'!

Thanks again.

Hi Speed King and welcome to ECF!

I smoked for 37 years. I quit smoking using ecigs and might be dead right now if I had not found them. For me, I loved smoking and still love the smell of cigs and I think I could go back to smoking in a heartbeat. If I let myself. I have no desire to do that now, but the process that got me here is not trivial.

Does it make sense for a non-smoker to jump in?

No, not to me. I was addicted to smoking and if I could turn back the clock and leave that behind I would.

I suggest you take the tech nut thingy and use it somewhere else. Anyplace else that is safer would be my preference.
