Does the Oddy clone require no-resistence wire?

A lot of people shy away from this one, but you'd be surprised how common this practice of NR-R-NR wire is. I became used to it when I got my first Ody clone. Since then, I've noticed that the technique is used on many factory builds. If you take a new Kanger T3 apart and examine the factory wire, you would notice that they do this in their coil building.

For 32 gauge Kanthal, which is much larger than most factory wire, 2 mm of resistance wire will add 0.1 ohms of resistance. This added resistance is totally wasted, since it is not wrapped around wick and juice. For good coil building, this added/wasted resistance and heat should be figured in to your calculations to determine a proper build.

I built one of the Breaktru wire welders, and make my own ready wires. I even use these wires in my RDAs, though they have very short leads anyway. Any resistance wire in my coils is totally around good wick and juice; nothing wasted.

A bump, as this is the answer to the exact question I had.. does *any* general purpose conductive wire qualify for this job, or should I be specifically using nickel NR wire?

Nickel or .999 silver are the most often used. You should get a gauge that is similar to the gauge of the Kanthal you are using.

Oddy clone and Ithaka both require the use of NR. The Kayfun/KFclones do not need NR wire. With the ready wires, the Oddy/Ithaka clones are not difficult to get set up.

Thank you! I ordered a spool of NR-Ni .32ga on eBay. I'm in Korea so shipping is gonna be a while.. My Oddy clone didn't come with spare NR wire, only R, along with a single spare ready-made wick. Should be enough to hold things off before I start playing around.. :)
