I have to wonder if any of these panelists have every tried feeding a family of four on a low income. If your choice is buy a pizza and supply 1000 calories to each of four people for $6, or spend $20(and an extra hour of active cooking time) to provide a balanced meal of the same or fewer calories, when you're stretching each paycheck as far as they can go and sometimes have to choose between lunch and gas... an extra sugar/fat tax to pay for nutrition propaganda isn't going to help.

If they really want to help, they should stop subsidizing corn and find a way to make vegetables/fruits cheaper.

The healthier you are the less you cost them.

First, you don't cost "them", you cost yourself since the money is from your taxes.

Second, from an "official money" perspective, ideally you shall die suddenly at 65 (or whatever retirement age is in effect), as to minimize the expense from the money they already collected from you.

Third, from a bribes perspective, it all depends on the interests of the deep pocketed bribers.

And 'healthier' according to their junk science, in many instances.

Back in my days it was mom's responsability to pack my lunch. If I didn't like something I would complain and she would try to adjust. Can't do that when the government is deciding, can you? Soylent Green for all.

Eh, the government is only deciding if they're footing the bill. What I tell my kid is, if I'm paying for your food, you're going to eat what I give you, or be hungry, though I do try to accommodate her.

If the government wants to subsidize my monthly food bill, I'll happily prepare quinoa, free-range turkey, tofu, and organic greens.

I've actually been trying to eat better, less refined sugar, more whole wheat, more fresh fruits and vegetables and I DO feel healthier, but my food costs have risen by at least 50%. Also, when I'm crunched for time and/or money, cheap fast food is what we get.

Some, but they borrow from other countries to meet the demands of the budget, so it is still part of their interest to keep the costs down. And not everyone pays taxes enough to handle their own costs.

Noticed that too. When expressing my purchase power in junk food (and junk items in general), I'm filthy rich. But as soon as I reach for something better, I look broke. We're rich in junk.

The nutritional aspect of our lives is something we began to look more seriously at "after" taking up vaping and quitting smoking over three years ago. It is my belief that there is a fixed to fail mindset in much of the human population that is self destructive and a large part of it is driven through the "I smoke so I am gonna die" that is deeply rooted in our brains.

Getting past that it has been like seeing a new possible horizon that has changed many aspects of our lives including our outlook on near and long term health. We (My Wife, Daughter and I) began eating better foods and less of it. Sure it does cost a little more and it can at times be more of a challenge to decide what to prepare considering we have been doing this for only a few years while our old ways have been ingrained over half a century. Some things we have done to help offset this are keeping chickens for eggs and eventually meat and gardening. This is even more effort and the savings are not always apparent, also not everyone is in a position to even think about going this direction where we are fortunate with a mild climate, our own well for inexpensive water and room to do these things. We hope that we will be able to grow and produce enough abundance beyond our own needs to help others in an affordable way to have access to healthy fresh foods. In the last two years we have lost just about a third of our combined body weight and our overall health continues to improve.

The point is though that being a smoker makes the idea of a better future moot so why bother, once you see the possibility of that better future you can always find small ways to improve on the direction you are going like maybe having a glass of water with that pizza instead of soda, two slices that leave you satisfied instead of four and ready for a nap. I wish everyone the best and have high hopes that your own success in quitting smoking spreads to encourage improvements in all aspects of your lives.

Once a gov't takes control of health care, they have a vested interest in what you eat, drink, use, or do with regard to your body's health.

Sorry for replying a second time to the same post, but it had to be mentioned: once a government gets a vested interest in what you eat, drink, use or do with regard your body, it will tend to organize everything like a labor camp.

This is nothing new. Food containing fat has also been discussed for tax punishment. The people have surrendered to the idea of sin taxes. The legislators can justify any tax on that basis. Until the public stands up against this tactic as an excuse to gain unjustified revenues the pattern will continue. Always remember the sin taxes are the only tax that are "good" for you. If this was private enterprise it would be labeled a scam.

And social security would be called a Ponzi Scheme.

Well, if the true intention is to eliminate a "bad" product or to reduce the price gap between a "bad" and a "good" version of the same product, there are several revenue neutral ways to accomplish this. It only looks suspicious that none of them are ever mentioned.

Government 'steering' never works or results in 'workarounds' that are worse than the 'problem'. If gov't would concentrate on actual crimes/violation of rights and leave the 'steering' to the people on personal moral and health issues, we'd all be better off.
