I found something easy and effective to help clean out cartos using the hot water method. Get one of those children's medicine dosing syringes (non-needle) from the pharmacy. Ask for the adapter cap that looks like a wide plastic screw. It fits the syringe onto the bottles to help get out the last drops. If you have young kids you probably have lots of these lying around.
I've found the wide end of the adapter is a perfect fit for the cartos to go inside. Then after you've soaked them in hot water, just push/pull more hot water through to get the rest of the gunk out.
