I am sorry Jules... I was not clear on what I said... but I am looking for the same thing that you were originally in this thread... I don't want to use my computer if I don't have to, so I am looking for the wall usb hub(that won't fry my atty) and car usb adapter (that won't fry my atty)...

I think the consensus is that the kensington mobile charger is the way to go...but how yours didn't work right that you posted about threw me a little...

thx

these have worked for you with no issue consistently?

The passthru hooked to the computer has worked great, but like you and many others I want to get away from that all together if I can. I just don't like putting my computer at risk in anyway. If something happened to it I would go nuttier than I already am,lol

I had good results using the USB extension cord but not the charger adapter. The one I got was recommended by someone on this thread but it just dint work for me at all. I am going to break down next month and get a Kensignton unless I can build a passthru that goes directly to an outlet. I know I can do a battery mod, well okm the hubby can build a battery mod,lol so that will solve the being out and about thing. But I want a passthru that plugs directly into an outlet without an adapter. Not sure if it can be done and not brun up attys left and right. WIll just have to give it a try and see what happens.

I want to order a passthru for my 901 but I have a problem, I think. I don't have a normal desktop setup. I can't sit at a computer in a normal fashion. I have to lay propped up on my couch. I have an L shaped desk that goes around the foot of the couch. My monitor is on the end closest to me. The Tower is exactly 60" from me, in a straight line, no slack in the measuring tape at all. There is really no other options to the arrangement at this time. Everything I have is wireless so I use a lot of the USB ports.

I have been told a couple things about the passthru.
1. If you have a lot of USB ports in use then the passthru won't work well.
2. Using a USB extension cord will cause a decrease in the strength of the passthru and it won't fire up the atomizer.

Both of these things have been told to me by dealers and I just don't see them telling me that unlessit's the truth since they are in the business to sell things, not talk you out of them

Has anyone had any experience with this? Do you use an extension cord, or have you tried to use one. I really want to be able to use a passthru but it's looking like it may not happen.

Thanks in advance for any help you give!

i don't know if anyone all ready posted this but most usb hubs are powered so it woulden't overload the usb connectors on your computer.I don't think you have a problem with the pass though.

I should have mentioned that besides the Kensington power pack, I also have the Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Lighted Hub that I bought at Office Max.

Just make sure you buy one with a wall outlet power plug. A very nice feature is that it has a USB cord that is long.

I plug the Belkin's power cord directly into a wall outlet (via surge protector) and it works great with my 510 passthrough.

Hope this helps.

I bought a USB passthrough for my 901, and the only place it DOES work is in the USB port of my computer.

I tried buying a battery for cell phone and Ipod recharging (1000 MAH), but it made only a very little vapor. I tried a USB plug-in for the car cigarette lighter (1000 MAH) - no vapor. I tried my Ipod wall outlet plug-in for recharging the Ipod - no vapor.

I was really hoping that the USB passtrough would allow me to vape while plugged into the car, or while plugged into a wall outlet, or allow me to use a strong portable pocket battery. I had hoped for an alternative to constantly charging 901 batteries all the time.

I am bummed that it only works in my computer.

Thanks everyone. I got a USB extension cord and it works great with my passthru. I am going to get a Kensington power pack the first of the month (limited income because I'm disabled) I think between the two I'll be very happy!

I'm also going to try my hand at a little modding too. I think I can follow some of the directions given in the modders forum and then I will really be set!

From what I was told by a supplier, you need an adapter that has at least a 1200 mAh output, that 1000mAh is just not enough to power the atomizer. I Haven't bought a 1200 yet but I will.

Thanks for the info!

So..... as long as I purchase batteries and adapters 1200 mAh or greater, it should work and vape well. Are there any other specs I need to be aware of, or "beware" of when purchasing?

I'm sure we would all like to hear the results if someone does get a USB passtrough to work with a battery pack/charger, or a by plugging into the cigarette lighter adapter, or a wall outlet adapter. I have struck out on all three because I got some bad info the first time, and did not get 1200 mAh or greater, but I will start shopping again and keep trying. I really want to get it to work!

.....After that, the only other problem I have with vaping is good quality 901 atomizers at a bargain price! lol!

there is a video on youtube that shows the brand and review of a decent priced charger pack... it is done by parked

I found a video by parked about a "cigarette box charger" with holes inside to charge batteries. Looks really cool! Is that the video you meant?

I was thinking about a battery/charger that you use to charge cell phones and Ipods. I was thinking about a pocket sized "super battery" that you could plug a USB passtrough into and vape from it directly, as you would from your computer.

With the USB cord attached, I guess it would look like you had a "pocket hooka"!

lol!

I have built 5 different USB devices and they all worked just fine on my PC, except for the one time I had a short in one. MY PC told me the device would not get power from the USB port and essentially shut it down. Pretty cool!

As far as a USB extender, I have one, and it worked just fine as well. I could not tell any difference than when I was plugging directly into the PC. I also have a 5 and 6 volt power supply that I spliced a USB end on, and those work just fine as well.

So, from my own experience, I have seen no issues with using a USB port or an extender.

I am in the software business now, but have been in the IT field for the past 15 years. I have built PCs and severs for a living, and know them pretty well. As long as you know how to wire them, or buy them from a reputable source, you should be just fine.

It would have been really cool if Tesla's idea of wireless electricity had taken off. We could vape with no cords and recharge at the same time!!!

I also have a car lighter adapter I purchased from some guy in China. It regulates the voltage from 12-36 volts down to 5 volts and 1000mA. It works really well!! If anyone is interested in where I got it, PM me and I will send you the details of the person (I went through ebay). Oh, and the adapter came with a wall plug (I cannot get this to work with any of my USB devices - may be a handshake issue, but not sure), and it also came with an iPod cable. All for just under $6.00 USD!! Beat that, Kensignton!

Sorry, have to put this in as I just read some bad info above. I have a power supply that puts out 5 volts at 500 mA, and it vapes really well. I also have a 5 volt, 1000mA adapter that works just as well. It really depends on the voltage to amperage ratio. The higher the voltage, the lower the amperage can be, but you definitely do not want to go over 6 volts, and under 3.5 volts will not vape too well. It will vape, but not enough power.

I am by no means an "electrician", but this is what I have found personally.

I hope this helps!

I am getting gun-shy! I want to get it all to work, but everything I've bought so far has not worked. I just wish there was someone that could give us some definitive specs to look for when purchasing. What makes some battery packs vape and some do not?

I can't post links yet (until 15 posts), but I found the XPal-Portable-Li-PoBattery-Pack-Harry-II on "dealtaker". 14.99 is great, but will it even work? here are some specs:

XPal Portable Li-Po Battery Pack Specifications

Rated Output: DC 5V, Max 500 mA

Weight: 2.5oz – 70g

XPal Portable Li-Po Battery Pack Features
Portable USB power pack with specific power adapter tips for mobile phones
2000 mAh @ 5V power capacity

I already returned a 1000 mah battery pack to radio shack that didn't vape. At least I've seen the APC vape, so I think I will spend more and can rest assured it WILL work.

I bought a car cigarette adapter on eBay: "USB Car Charger Adapter For iPhone iPod Mp3 Video-Mini" 5v 1000 mah ($1.79 with shipping - so cheap it didn't matter), but it didn't work.

Oh, well, keep trying I guess........
