Similar. MOSFET is solid state... a relay has contacts in it. MOSFET has a longer MTBF, relay has other aspects... can handle more short-term abuse, can pass AC current, I've heard it's more isolated than a FET. The real electronics guru's can tell ya more, or google it on electronics sites for more info (I'm not an expert).

But yeah, it's a switched switch.

The main point behind the comments above... even tho you have a big battery, and it's not over-stressed... the electronic circuits (including the mosfet and whatever else is in there) can be. The electronics have to be designed to take X amount of power (watts) (volts X amps).

er.. not exactly (but a bit clearer, I think :p ) The mosfet controls how much power the smaller batts can release? Something like that?


Now, on the duals tho... if they aren't so great on the egos (risky) and *may* work on the 3.7 mods... well, which batts SHOULD they be used on???


BTW: I am using mine on my vgo (900mah) and my 3.7 mod, and thinking of using it on my 5v mod. But I don't want to ruin my new GLV, so I'm holding off on that one till I get the 'go-ahead'!
 
I use duals on regular e-cig 510 batteries.
If a mosfet was gonna pop, it would right there and then.
I am not advising doing this, and have been doing this for test. It's quite hard o the battery life, and life is dropped rather quickly. I'm doing this to see how much these small 510's can take. They are handling the 1.5 ohm ok, and next run will be the 1.25 ohm.
If mosfets blow out on larger batteries, I would consider it a design flaw or a cheap unit.

The thing is.. the small 510 batteries don't fry the mosfets... 'cuz they are TOO SMALL (they can't put out enough current per second). lol. It tricked you. I (and others) have posts somewhere about using them (1.5 ohm stuff) on 510's. Just real crappy battery life, as opposed to normal crappy. Oh, and it does stress the battery a bit.. but IDK if you care. Of course, you won't get the full performance out of it, but it will be maxed out from a battery perspective.

As far as design flaw... IDK... suppose... but you'd have to know what they were designed for to begin with. If you design a PV today, who's to say that tomorrow someone won't come out with a .5 ohm atty? Doesn't mean it's a good idea to use one. YMMV.

Any mosfet has a rating. The only way to avoid it is all-mechanical 3.7 volt mods.

It's like a light switch (on/off). Let's electricity flow through it (rather than the little button you push). It's activated by the little button.

Battery---> MOSFET ----> Atomizer

MOSFET activated by the little button you push to vape.

BTW... I think that 1.5 ohm stuff on true 3.7 volt devices is too hot anyway. Burns the juice.

Those who say "only resistance matters" are not exactly right. Yes, only resistance determines what wattage (amount of heat produced per second) will you have with the given battery's voltage. But also the size of the coil matters a lot, I.e. What matters is "wattage per square millimeter plus coil's square". Dual coils are just two regular resistance coils in parallel. So they have double wattage plus double square but the same wattage per millimeter comparing to regular resistance coils. LR coils must be made shorter or thinner to achieve low resistance, so they have higher wattage and lower square, so their wattage per millimeter value is much higher, this means higher temperature, but smaller square of the surface producing vapor.

Sorry. We throw that term around a lot. lol.

It's actually not a very accurate term... should probably say "power mosfet".... MOSFET is just a type of semi-conductor technology. A power-mosfet is a switch.

Think about the Hoover Dam. It has big gates for the water flow.... So, do you think that someone goes out to the dam and turns a REALLY BIG wheel to open and close the gate? Probably not. They put a motor on them, and have a small lever in the "control room" that turns the motor on/off. So a little switch controls a "thing" that moves a bigger thing.

That's why we use mosfets in mods... little buttons. The little buttons (like on the eGo) would MELT/break if all the electricity went through them. A mosfet is a switch that is turned on by a smaller switch. The electricity goes through the mosfet, not the button (well, most of it).

Even the power mosfets have ratings as to how much electricity they can take before they overheat and fry.

As far as DC's.... the 3.7 volt mods should be fine, I would think. The eGO stuff... may depend on the ohms and the vaping style... but risk it if you wish. I've seen warnings, but I'm not sure for what ohms. I think MV had some warnings for certain ones. The all-mechanical mods in particular should survive it, since they don't have a mosfet.

It's really part of a whole circuit board. Has a mosfet, pays atttention to the button timing (cut-off), modulates the power, knows if there is a charger, turns on an LED, who knows what else. Basically, the internal circuitry, as compared to the actual battery itself (which is inside the "battery part"/power supply).
