Anyone use dual serial coils in an Aqua? Seems like it would be an easier build. To me anyway.

I've got a Cana DNA 30 and it tends to like the 1.5 ohm range. This is a walk in the park with a kayfun BUT hitting the mark with dual parallel coils in an Aqua is a bit tough. The build deck is too small to get two huge coils inside the chimney without touching anything. I was thinking of serial coils because the coils are smaller but the resistance is doubled. Isn't that correct?

I mean to get a final resistance of 1.5 ohms with parallel coils I have to wrap two coils @ 3.0 ohms each.
That would equate to... 28g, 20 wraps on a 2mm rod.... TWICE!! That's a lot for such a small deck

For dual serial coils... 28g, 4 wraps on a 2mm rod, twice in series. That's a lot easier to deal with!!

Is my logic off here??

That's what I was thinking too. It's a shame for such a nice tank to be collecting dust. I like the Aqua but I haven't been able to get dual parallel coils to work like I want them too at the resistance I need them too. Then I thought of doing them in series instead. Seems sooooo much easier. Compact and only one wire for each post too.

I run 30 gauge in my aqua to hit the 1ohm mark. I don't think it would be hard at all to run 1.5ohm with a few more wraps, or even 32 gauge

Mine has been collecting dust simply because I had a lot of trouble mounting two coils with those thumbscrews. I got the right resistance using a higher gauge wire, which is thinner, and DID manage to get them mounted, but it was such a pain, and they were messy and not glowing evenly, which I think led to lack of taste and leaks so I gave up on it. I wasn't unhappy with my Kayfun style tanks, and they were easier to set up, so I shelved the Aqua.

It should work, have you ever made a diamond coil? That is 4 cois in a series.
I used to run one at 3ohms at 15w and I loved it of course it was 30g so it heated up quick.
Doing only 2 coils in series shoudnt be bad at all.

I've never done coils in series only parallel. Gonna give it a shot though :)

Yeah give a diamond coil a try I'm thinking of trying to build a sub ohm one but even with 24g that's gonna be hard to get a liw resistance with so much wire lol might have to do dual diamond,
Ohhh or parallel diamond lol.
That's coils in seires, paralleled
Mind blown :vapor:

A thought... (dangerous, I know)... sense the voltage is being split across both coils instead of applying the same voltage to each coil there should be less drain on the battery, correct?

It would be the same as a single coil with the combined resistance. In a series circuit voltage is split and current is the same. In a parallel circuit current is split and voltage is the same (across all resistors).

The trick is to leave the legs on your coils long enough to wrap it one full time around the post. I hold the coil in the spot I want it with my screwdriver I wrap on, wrap both legs around one full time, then make the other coil and do thre same on the other side. Then I tighten down the thumb screws, usually using little pliers cuz I don't teeny hands for it. Then I cut the excess leg off the coils, fire and tweeze till pretty.

Messed up thing is, I struggled with my kayfun cuz I kept getting a short from the + post via leg and id end up having to tear the whole thing down and rinse it all out etc etc just to even look at the coil. With the aqua I just flip upside down and screw the base and I don't have to empty the juice or anything, makes it easier for me!

The dual serial coil was a breeze on the Aqua and it works GREAT!! I was aiming for 1.5 ohm but it came out to 1.6 ohm instead. I guess the bridge between the two coils was a little too long. It was soooo much easier than trying to build two parallel coils and hit the 1.5 ohm mark while keeping everything contained to the build deck area and inside the chimney without a short.

I have found the new build for my Aqua!!

Looks good. Does the stretch of wire between the coils heat up to much? I would think that would be one giant hot spot and would benefit from some NR wire wrapped around it.
