Is this something that happens often though? Short-circuiting a battery? I swear all I did was dump really hot water on these attys, stirred them around some, blew air through them, then dried them with a hair-dryer. Am I underestimating how delicate they really are?

Definitely not. I've short-circuited one of my batteries and and it still working. Maybe it's just bad batch. Anyway, it's nice to hear that Liberty Flights has a good customer care, hope you'll receive working batteries in no time. And be sure to try some good cartos, Boge as already suggested, they are known to be good.
