Folks,

I created a map page showing where the people that have created banners on my site have come from. Note that this is done by IP address, so it's a bit rough (for example, my location shows as Glasgow instead of Dunfermline) - but it gives a decent picture of where people are from.

Note that the banner creation process does not collect any personal information, other than your IP address (which is captured by any site you visit).

You can view the map here: http://www.smokewithoutfire.co.uk/BannerMap.html

Note that this map is hosted on a commercial site selling e-cigs.

Yes - creating a banner will cause a pin to appear on the map, even if you don't use it.

However, banners that haven't been accessed for some period of time (probably 30-60 days) will be aged out of the database. Banners that haven't been accessed at all will probably be aged out quicker (7 days maybe). I've not actually done the work to remove banners yet, so at the moment they all live forever :)

There may be a slightly higher number of pins in the UK just now, because the banners are pretty popular over at the totallywicked forums.

 map !

But uuhhmmm, when I click on 'Create a banner', all it does is open up a new tab which shows the commercial website. Is that supposed to happen or does that maybe have something to do with my browser (I opened the link in IE7) ?? And if so, how do I go about making a banner ??

Cheers,
Silver

Chrissie, if you post the link to your banner (or PM it to me), I'll figure out where it's placing you.

The placement is done by turning your IP address into a location, which can be pretty rough when you use a large ISP. I might end up offering folks on here the chance to send me more exact co-ordinates that I could tag their banners with. No promises though :)

Ooops, my bad! Fixed that so that the 'create a banner' link opens the correct page!

Also changed the zoom level and positioning so we can see the entire world at once.

Thanx mate, much appreciated !

Done and dusted, although it did put me in Auckland city, which is not quite where I am ;). I'll drop you a PM in case you do decide to offer the service of more exact co-ordinates.

Cheers,
Silver
