No e-cigarette exploded. Dangerously misleading headline.

Freund said there is no obvious explanation for the malfunction.

"There have been incidents where the battery comes into contact with water, or loose change, but this one is unexplainable," he said. "There was nothing in her pocket. The battery wasn't attached to anything."

Not sure how that would happen. I hope she heals fast and feels better soon. And that everybody uses a battery case.

Why is it that the article Repeatedly mentions it as an "e-Cigarette Battery" or a just a "Battery", but the Headline say that it was an "e-Cigarette".

I hope they find a Tiny Fragment of her House Key or a piece of a Coin imbedded in the Remains of the Battery. Because I seriously Doubt that she had Nothing in her pocket except a Bare Battery.

I agree. This is just a lawsuit looking for a victim

This was a loose battery with unprotected terminals. What a lot of people may not realize is the entire outer metal casing of the battery, except for the top, is the negative side of the battery so if the wrap is damaged near the positive side the battery can short very easily. Still it's ashame this kind of thing happens. The CPSC could be out in front of this doing what they do, warning people about safe handling of Li batteries. I'm also starting to suspect that most of these accidents happen to vape shop customers. If I'm right it says they are not giving the kind of service people should reasonably expect when they pay a premium to do business there.

Greetings! The title of the following article is very misleading as a e-cigarette did not actually explode...

E-cigarette violently explodes in pocket of Queens woman

These batteries are not just used in e-cigarettes they are also used in flashlights and other consumer electronics as well, most laptop batteries use them inside that outer casing...

It costs just 50 cents to purchase a protective case to carry spare batteries in, they protect not only from short circuits but they also protect the batteries from being damaged as well, it could have even protected her body from any damage if for some reason the particular battery was faulty.

http://www.amazon.com/MaxSale-CR123...1461121324&sr=8-2&keywords=18650+plastic+case

The girl stated she had nothing else in her pocket, well that isn't good enough people should be using a case to carry spares it's as simple as that...

While I do believe your article title to be misleading you have a chance here to change it and possibly prevent someone else from being harmed in the same manor by explaining a simple case could have prevented the whole ordeal or at least minimized the impact... You can step above other news outlets and actually give useful information that might help someone :)

Thank your for reading and have a most wonderful day...

Would that really offer much protection against injury in the event of a battery venting?

Thanks for writing to the author. I have a feeling the headline was the work of an editor, giddy about the click-bait potential.

Got a response..

Hmmmm. So why do they keep exploding? I've had a lot of batteries. None have ever exploded. Why do consumers have to buy a special case?

My response to him..

It's just the technology/chemistry of lithium batteries, google, cellphone or hoverboard explodes, the chemistry of the batteries makes them very energy dense but at the same time allows for that energy to be released really fast, for example lithium ion drill packs use them as well, a lot of power is needed to give the torque the motor needs to drive a really big screw in and to be able to provide that power the battery needs to release it's energy really fast..

Using a case with the batteries can prevent both damage and remove the potential for short circuits, for people like her that don't bother they need to know why it's important to pay that lol 50 cents...

You just don't see them in the news as much, vaping is a highly controversial subject right now, pretty obvious considering the amount it's showed in the news however the science says it's extremely safer than smoking 95% average 99% optimal, what it all come down to is nicotine isn't all that bad for you, but there's two groups of people, the abstinence only crowd that thinks anyone that is addicted or likes things like Nicotine, Caffeine, Alcohol, recreational drugs, should just stop using them altogether and then theirs the harm reduction crowd, Here's an example:

Joe here is a smoker, Joe has smoked for 22 years, he's starting to die from it, early stages of COPD, high blood pressure, can't run 20 feet without getting out of breath and coughing up a lung but Joe loves to smoke, not just the nicotine, but the motions, hand to mouth movement, seeing the smoke, anxiety relief, helps him with concentration etc etc. Joe is going to die from smoking unless he either (A): Stops Which Joe doesn't want to do. or (B) Reduce the risk by still getting everything he likes from smoking by switching to vaping and reducing the risk by 95-99%....

Lets pretend Joe is 34 and started smoking at 12 and worked his way up to 2 or 3 packs a day..... A concerned love one buys Joe a vape and Joe starts vaping just to at least cut down his smoking at this point he's using both cigarettes and the vape, the vape tastes great compared to the smoke so he starts using it more and more, eventually he quits smoking without even really trying or meaning to and switched completely to vaping....

About 1 or 2 weeks after the switch Joe's body says HEY! you're not trying to kill me anymore and starts healing itself (additives in cigarettes suppresses the symptoms of many smoking related diseases so your body doesn't know to heal them so you can continue smoking/buying big tobacco's product) Let's fast forward a year and a half and now Joe can run, he can play with kids more, he's getting interested in sports which he couldn't do since he was 13-14 years old, his life will be longer, he no longer smells like a bucket of burning tar, his COPD has completely went a away and for the first time in years he can both breathe better and taste food again etc etc etc...

See the harm reduction crowd, see merit in Joe making the switch while the abstinence only crowd feels Joe shouldn't make the switch and are perfectly find with Joe dying because he likes smoking, they probably don't want him to die but he will anyways...

Now ask yourself, what if Joe saw this article with its misleading title while he was still a smoker? Do you think he would still be as likely to make the life saving switch or would he be scared away from vaping altogether? This article could potentially kill people...

Truth is Joe's story is actually my story, I was a very heavy smoker for 22 years, vaping saved my life, it has given me a better quality of life and I've been smoke free for about a year and a half now thanks to vaping, please I beg you don't be so ready to hit vaping with a stick like its a pinata and if you do please provide information like I mentioned above how a simple battery case could have prevented the entire issue... Not only tell the news but make it useful as well.

I smell a rat. This incident happened on the 7th of April. This is the date I believe
the young man suffered his accident. Both stories have been significantly delayed
being reported by the press. In the first story the details were very vague. In this
story there are pertinent details. In both stories the victims are already layered up.
There is no additional news releases on the first story. This new story seems to
have followed the responses to the first story and fined tuned the reporting to account
for the lack of detail of the first. Lastly (because I am wearing my tinfoil hat) one
story is out of Brooklyn NY and,the other from Queens NY. Coincidence? Mmmm...,
maybe.
;)
Returning to Earth regards,
Mike

My response to him..

It's kinda a Shame.

Because nothing at this point is going to take the Burn off that Lady's Leg. And yes, the Article was going to be Written.

But the Shame is that the Author did not see the worth to Understand Batteries and how Dangerous it is to Carry a Bare Battery (any Battery) in a Pocket or Purse or Bag.

What a Missed Opportunity to Inform Readers and to possibly prevent something like this from happing in the Future.

Some might even say that the author Could/Would/Should have a Moral Responsibility to include another Inch of Print explaining how a Battery can Short. And how Carrying a Battery in a Case prevents this. Taking this Article beyond Splash Reporting and into the Realm of Informative Journalism.

BTW - I hope you included a Link to this Thread when you e-Mailed the Author.

"It's unconscionable that a product that is being marketed internationally as a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes actually poses life threatening immediate health risks," he said.
Freund and Williams are preparing to sue the manufacturer and the shop, they say.
Williams started using e-cigarettes to kick her smoking habit and recently bought the LG IMR 18650 battery at the VapeEasy shop on Canal St.
Freund said there is no obvious explanation for the malfunction.
"There have been incidents where the battery comes into contact with water, or loose change, but this one is unexplainable," he said. "There was nothing in her pocket. The battery wasn't attached to anything."
