Hello all -
So I started using e cigs almost a week ago, and I have run into a bit of a problem with coughing. I quit smoking and switched to e cigs 100% of the time last Saturday. When I was smoking, I smoked about 1/3 a pack a day.
I have since tried 3 brands of e cigs with different coughing results. I have read that some people can have a PG sensitivity, however I also read that this is more of a lung cough. I am experiencing a throat cough. These are the brands I've used:

Blu (disposable) tobacco flavor = TERRIBLE cough!
Niktech Metro tobacco flavor = Barely any cough (no cough at all if I smoke fast enough to keep the carto warm)
FV Flavor Vapes vanilla flavor = Medium cough

See, I read somewhere that Blu are mostly VG, so this is what's confusing me - Does this sound like a PG sensitivity? Could it be from quitting cigarettes cold turkey and replacing with Nicotine gum + e cigs?
I have taken a break from the e cigs for now and have gone back to smoking. I am waiting to receive an Ego in the mail, as well as some Alice in Vapeland juice.
I really want this to work out and quit smoking, so any help would be appreciated! :)

I had the same problem a few years ago when vaping was fairly new and went back to analogs. The coughing kept me off ecigs until I tried it again recently. Someone told me to use a 2 stage inhale instead of a drag directly to the lungs, similar to a cigar puff, but then inhale after you let it sit in your mouth for a second. Not only did I not cough anymore but it allowed me to enjoy the flavor more. Try it out.

It can be many things.

You might be allergic to PG. But it's more probable that your throat gets dry. PG dehydrates and your throat reacts. Solution is simple and spelled many times over the forum: drink lot of water (tea, juice, whatever makes you happy).

Other thing that is quite probable (well, almost certain) is that your lungs are finally getting an opportunity to get rid of all tar you put in them over the years. We all went through that phase, it will pass.

Other thing to consider is whether some of the juices has some ingredient that is harsh. It's usually in the flavour. Change the brand. But still, drink lots of water and let the lughs cough out what they need to cough out.

Also, when you vape, deeply inhaling is not useful to nicotine absorption. The vape droplets are too large for absorption to happen much in the lungs; instead, you absorb nearly all the nicotine via the mouth and nasal passages. I've found that I inhale only down to my larynx. When I smoked, I inhaled down to my toenails.

People may be sensitive to:
VG
PG
flavorings -- It can be to a general class, like "cinnamons", or to something specific, like "cinnamons using X's cinnamon flavoring"

In my case I get a bit of a "heavy" feeling in my chest if I vape high VG, but pretty mild. Others may have a variety of symptoms from sensitivities.

The tips on inhale are all good. Also, with vaping drinking a lot of water is important. Try a sip before you inhale, then after you exhale, to keep your throat moist.

End of the day we are replacing smoking with inhaling something, there is some body "adaptation", getting used to inhaling the vapor. Remember the first time you smoked? Likely coughed a lot early on, adjusting to inhaling that.

The nicotine in eliquid will also tend to produce a "tickle" at the back of the throat, with a bit of a peppery sensation to some, especially at higher nic levels (more noticeable in a 30 mg/ml than a 12 mg/ml eliquid). Part of the break-in is your body getting used to this.

You'll get there -- wanting to switch is a huge part of succeeding :)

switch up your juices. also nicotine strength plays huge factor in this problem as well as the delivery system you are using .. keep trying diffrent things untill you find your set up .. took me almost 2 years to figure out mine. i am currently on an evic and provari mini using a 2-3 wrap ssmesh silica hybrid running 1.3 ohms in a phoenix RBA at 3.6 v's.. that prolly just went riiiight over your head.. lol DONT GIVE UP keep trying you WILL find wht works for you.. promise :)

Coughing when you are first switching is common. Like others said, inhale into your mouth first. You can also use your tongue to block the vapor from going straight back to your throat. Vaping makes people cough at first, much like cigarettes, but with a big difference - it goes away. No more smoker's cough/burning chest for me!

Oddly enough, this is how I smoked and it's how I vape.
I never could inhale straight to my lungs, analog or e-cig(well, kinda can with the e-cig, but I find it to be a hassle)
