I've had my device for about a week now after a few days, I noticed it was starting to decrease in effectivity sometimes it would make no vapour, or gurgling noises and/or spitting juice. After doing some research, I discovered that these were symptoms of the atomizer beginning to fail, I unscrewed the whole cartridge and put a new one on and it seems to be working a little better but it will sometimes show these symptoms. What I am wondering is if I actually did something, or is the atomizer a smaller separate piece that must be removed in a different way?

what type tank are you using.i use iclear16's or vision ce5's.
the replacement coil comes with the wicks already installed.
some times its necessary to push out the center pin on the bottom of the coil assembly slightly
to insure good contact.make sure all the contacts are clean.
you can dry fire the coil(attached to the base but,not inserted in to the tank)
to make sure of proper firing before complete assembly.2-3 second bursts typically.
used coil assemblies can be cleaned.remove the cap.gently rinse under warn water.massage the wicks gently
to remove old juice.place in a small container with water,a couple of drops of dish soap, and let soak over night.
rinse again and air dry.dry burn before assembly.some people prefer vodka or everclear for the soaking.
regards
mike

I bought it used off of someone so I dont know what kind of tanks they are, but they're green transparent, if that helps, it seems to be the only piece that really unscrews and I dont really know the anatomy of an e-cig that well so when I examine it I dont know what's what.

you might have overtightened the tank to the battery. Can you try the tank on another battery? if not, I would first fully reassemble the tank, amking sure are contact points are secured. If that doesn't work, you can try to CAREFULLY pry the positive contact pin on the battery up like .5mm. A VERY SMALL AMOUNT.

I have noticed now that sometimes liquid will start leaking out of the bottom end and it will keep gurgling and spitting juice or not create any vapour, it's an on and off problem, i'm worried that the leakage is going to destroy it eventually.

Probably, but not really unless you have an automatic ego. I get juice in my mech mods a lot, probably not the smartest thing to do, but sometimes Im a messy dripper. If you're getting leakage then the connection probably isn't really good between the battery and atomizer. You have to have clean contacts for proper conductivity.
