Real valerian root tastes like old dirty socks.

I'm frightened to ask how you know how old dirty socks taste... in all seriousness though, deemkooo is absolutely right, real valerian root(in quantities to have an effect) would be a very nasty smelling and tasting liquid. I also have to echo mctriple's comment and tell you to make sure that whatever you vape, it's much lower nicotine than your normal, if not zero nic. I would suggest any type of flavor that you personally find comforting. Vanilla has always worked pretty well for me as a late night vape.

Don't bother with paying for Tylenol PM. The "PM" in Tylenol PM is just an antihistamine -- it's diphenhydramine HCl, exact same drug as Benadryl, so each capsule is the same as taking 1 (25mg) Benadryl + 1 (500mg) Tylenol...and unless you're in pain, you don't need the Tylenol part. (Nyquil, for all y'all green liquid junkies out there, also contains an antihistamine for the nighttime sedative part -- doxylamine succinate.)
Best option in lieu of Tylenol PM? Whatever store-brand generic "sleep aid" or "antihistamine" formulation contains doxylamine or diphenhydramine. Cheaper, and just as effective.

Though, I like melatonin best to get to sleep. No hangover feeling like you can get with antihistamines or other over-the-counter formulations.

If your shift schedule is that chaotic (3 nights on, 3 off), it can take a real toll on your internal circadian rhythms. I've known medical residents who use things like light-blocking curtains or full-spectrum (SAD) lamps in their effort to re-set their clocks quickly -- anything that can fool your body temporarily into "day" or "night" mode.

Real valerian root tastes like old dirty socks.
Yeah, lol.
I'd question whether the active compounds in valerian are in high enough concentration in any of these liquids to be effective (or vapeable); we just don't know. Placebo effects can be powerful, though... I just wouldn't rely on an eliquid to help you sleep. There's no data or knowledge on delivery of nonnicotine drugs (and herbs are drugs too) through the PV atomizers.

You can get valerian capsules (don't stick your nose in the bottle! :p). They're pretty safe as far as unregulated remedies go; but if you're taking other medications, it's always advisable to ask your doctor before trying any herbal or over-the-counter remedies.

I agree that lower nic is a good idea. (I get bad insomnia if I keep my nic levels at night the same as they were during the day.) The flavors I like in low-nic are different than those I like at higher-nic, so you might find you have to experiment around.

does valerian vape? ive been using valerian daily for a bit to help ease me off of the phenibut train ( horrible W/Ds from that stuff btw, dont think "oh its a dietary supplement, ill be fine ) and it does work pretty well to calm any GABAergic W/D related distresses to your CNS. it for sure will knock u the heck out!! its best to use herbs/supps that only affect GABA receptors (valerian/kava are great examples) if you are looking for sleep, because if they have any dopamine agonism/reuptake inhibition effects there will be what is called a "dopamine rebound" effect, where you will wake up after like 3 hours of sleep, bright eyed and bushy tailed, but still obviously wrecked physically from lack of sleep....

PS valerian is NASTY tasting. if that transfers over into the vape.....

Ugh.. you are so much better off buying an herbal supplement like Valerian root and then something called 5HTP. 5HTP helps your body produce tryptophan, like the effect you get from eating a big turkey dinner. Valerian root helps to make you feel sleepy. I would strongly recommend against trying to vape the stuff, it smells HORRIBLE. Really. it does. It really does smell like old dirty socks. I can't imagine it would taste all that great. You're better off spending your money on something you might actually use.

I take it every night because I have a hard time getting my mind to quiet down (and I have an insomniac partner who stays up way later than I do, so it benefits me to get to sleep before he does).

Also, because you work swing shift you might want to read up on the use of melatonin.

haha let me preface this by saying phenibut is VERY addictive, but its a GABA agonist that is kind of similar to alcohol, but more uppity and socially lubricating. its just about the best thing ive ever tried for anxiety, but the withdraw from even a few months of daily use is NASTY. and its so cheap that it is hard to control yourself. the first few weeks it helps you sleep SOOOO well, but then the dopamine rebound kicks in and you end up waking up after 3 hours of sleep fresh as a daisy, but looking like a zombie... if one does not have an addictive personality its a wonderful compound... but seeing as we are on a board full of nicotine addicts...

Real valerian root tastes like old dirty socks.

My cat loves to smell the stuff, tries to eat it, ew.

I don't think you would want to vape it.

I recommend trying melatonin.
It's sold most grocery stores now.
1mg is good to start.

There is also melatonin tea at Vitamin Shoppe, tho its a hormone, and not naturally occurring in plants that I know of.

Would it be possible to mix the valerian root in with something to mask the taste?
ummm... essence of Kimchi* MAY be able to mask the flavor. I make my own VR extract and it is without a doubt the nastiest tasting substance I would ever put in my mouth, but it's worth it. If I can't get to sleep, a 1oz shot and 20min later I really don't care that I still taste moldy gym sock. (I am exaggerating, it's not quite THAT bad)

on another note, nHaler's Sleepy Time Green Tea is brilliant...

Melatonin is a hormone. It's not a good thing to be messing with your hormones without a doctor's supervision. Thyroid, cortisol, insulin, adrenals all are hormone systems besides the regular sex hormones. If you end up screwing one of these systems up by taking Melatonin in a way that isn't safe for your body, you can end up with all kinds of weird symptoms.

5-HTP can be used to make L-tryptophan, and since it's more stable than tryptophan, it's safer. However, it works primarily by boosting your serotonin levels. If you happen to have high serotonin already, then your could end up with serotonin sickness. You can find the symptoms online. And it doesn't really make me sleepy. But I take it per doctor's prescription for low serotonin and it works great at a controlled dose.

I work nights and find that taking a short nap the last day I worked, then going to bed with my husband (who works days) and getting up really early, I can switch my sleep schedule back to a "normal" one on my days off. I have 3 days off each week. Then I only need something to help with sleep the first day back. I get up extra early (5 or 6am), go back to bed at noon and take 50mg of generic benadryl. That way I'm only taking it once a week. If you take it too many days in a row, you'll start getting hyper from it (for most people).
