The Xenforo forum software update (24 August 2022) arrived with some very cool new features. One of those is Bookmarks. Most people are familiar with web browser bookmarks. Xenforo's bookmarks work much the same way. The only difference is you are bookmarking a user post versus a web page.

Bookmarks Part 1 - The Basics

In this tutorial I'll cover how to use the Bookmarks feature. Bookmarks are very easy to setup, configure and use.

Bookmarks allow us to bookmark any user post. It's a very useful feature. Any post that you may want to revisit at a later date can be bookmarked.

Why would I want to use a Bookmark?

There are many reasons why someone might want to bookmark something. I've created many bookmarks that cover a wide variety of topics.

You might want to create a bookmark if, for example, you come across a useful post that contains information on how to build a specific rba, posts about coils, wicking, DIY information or recipes, a vape gear review, blog entries, Mooch's battery or charger info etc. etc. Or even posts in the Lounge.

Any post on ECF can be bookmarked.

Bookmarks also save a significant amount of time when compared to using the global Search function.

For this tutorial I suggest opening a new tab in your browser so you can easily follow along while performing the steps as they are covered. Also, open a thread in another browser tab. For this tutorial is doesn't matter which thread or post you select. It can be deleted at the end of the tutorial.

How do I create a Bookmark?

Find a post you want to add a bookmark for. In the example below I simply chose one of my posts.

The bookmark symbol is located immediately to the left of a post number. If you hover over the bookmarks symbol the outline turns red. Click the Bookmark symbol to create a bookmark.

Clicking on the bookmarks symbol turns it black and the following popup appears.

02.png

The Message field is where you name your bookmark. Name it and click Save. You don't have to name a bookmark. I recommend adding names to bookmarks to suit your individual needs.

For me, adding names (Message field) to my bookmarks makes for a tidier entry on my Bookmarks page. It's optional. Adding a name overwrites what is displayed (users post) for the bookmark. A bookmark name can be deleted at a later time if you only want to see the users post under your bookmark (see Edit Bookmark below).

Note: Labels will be covered in Part 2.

To view your saved bookmarks click on your avatar then click on the Bookmarks symbol. Your avatar, and user name, are located on the upper right of every ECF page.

03.png

On your Bookmarks page you will see a list of your saved bookmarks.

To visit a bookmarked post click on the bookmark URL (the orange hyperlink). The URL for each bookmark = the thread name and post number where the bookmarked post is located.

How do I edit and/or delete Bookmarks?

Click on the Gear symbol for the bookmark you want to Edit or Delete.

05a.png

The Bookmark tools window opens. You can then select Edit or Delete for that bookmark.

06.png

Click Edit and the following popup window appears.

07.png

In the Edit bookmark window you have the option to name (if you haven't already), rename or delete a bookmark.

You do not have to give your bookmarks a name. A bookmark name can also be deleted without deleting the bookmark. Select the name and press delete on your keyboard.

If you do not give a bookmark a name (Message field), or you delete a name, it will be displayed as the user post in the thread (see my first screenshot above).

Click Save to save your changes.

Clicking Delete will delete that bookmark.

At this point you can Delete any test bookmarks you created during the tutorial.

You now know the basics of how to create, edit and delete bookmarks.

Bookmarks Part 2 - Labels and Filters

I have many Bookmarks across several pages. Searching for one bookmark over several pages takes time.

Using Labels and Filters makes finding a specific bookmark, or group of bookmarks, quick and easy.

Labels and Filters allow us to have only the bookmarks with a selected label appear in our bookmarks list.

What are Labels?

Each bookmark can have a number of user defined tags called Labels. A label is used to filter our bookmarks.

Some label examples: DIY, RTA, RDA, Mod, Fran's Recipes, Hitt's Reviews etc. etc. Create labels that make sense to you.

From part 1 recall that when you create a bookmark you'll see the following popup window.

08.png

Labels can be created when you add a new bookmark. After entering the bookmark name in the Message field click in the Labels field. Add a label name, or multiple label names, for your bookmark. Click save when done.

How do I use Labels and Filters?

Here is a post I want to Bookmark and also add some useful Labels to the bookmark.

12.png

I named the bookmark Fran's Mocca Choc Cookie and added DIY and Fran's Recipe for my labels. I click Save and I'm done.

14.png

How to Filter our labeled bookmarks?

Now we will Filter our bookmarks so only those with a specific Label are displayed.

Go to your Bookmarks page.

Here are some of my bookmarks. Notice the first four have Labels (DIY, Fran's Recipes, Xenforo Tips).

15.png

Lets say I only want to display bookmarks labeled with DIY. Click on Filters. The Filter by label window pops up. Click once in the filters field. My labels are then displayed. I single click on DIY to select that Label.

16.png

17.png

The selected label appears in the filter field. If you selected the wrong label click on the "X" to the left of the label name to remove that label. Then select the correct label and click Filter.

18.png

Please note: Xenforo (forum software) limits us to using one label when searching our bookmarks.

After I click Filter the system filters my bookmarks using the selected label (DIY) and displays all entries found with DIY (label).
19.png

After finding the bookmark you're looking for you can then click on the URL to go to that bookmarked post. Or you can close the filtered results by clicking on the "X" located to the right of your label (see the upper left of the above screenshot). Closing the filtered results will refresh your display and relist all your bookmarks again.

How do I add Labels to previously created bookmarks?

Labels, and additional labels, can be added to existing bookmarks at any time. Click on the Gear symbol for a bookmark. The Bookmark tools window opens.
20.png

Choose edit and the Edit bookmark window opens. Add a label, or labels, then click Save when you are finished.
07.png

Is there a limit to the number of labels allowed for a single bookmark?

To see how many labels a bookmark can have I added 12 labels to one bookmark. I can't think of a reason why someone might want 12, or more, labels (but who knows?).

Can I delete labels?

Yes. In the Edit bookmark window you will see all the labels you created for a bookmark. To delete one or more labels click the "X" to the left of a label name in the Labels field. Then click Save.

Now you know how to create labels, use filters and edit your Labels.

In my opinion, the bookmarks feature using labels and filters is very useful and powerful.

That's it!!!
