I don't believe you can delete your posts, Pep. Though you can edit them. If you look at the bottom of your post, to the left of "Reply", it should say Edit Post.

By the way, NC by way of NYC?

EDIT: :D and if you wanna "delete" your post, you can just click Edit Post, delete everything, then type in ten dots (or whatever characters)

Geez. That's dumb. So I'll have a post sitting out there with a bunch of dots in it? I could have sworn I was able to delete them in the past. EH...oh well. Yessir. Queens to be exact. Lived out in Port Washington for a bit as well. Too damn expensive on that North Shore unless ya go out to Port Jeff. Ha.

You're able to edit your posts for about 24 hours, I think, after that the feature is locked for that post. As for deleting, if you need a post deleted you can use the report function to ask a mod to delete it (the little triangle at the bottom of the post). I think that's the proper protocol, anyway, I could be mistaken

lol, I can name a whole bunch of people who would disagree

Pep, there actually are good reasons for this, mostly from an administrative perspective. The vast majority of users wouldn't pose any problem at all if they had that ability, but I've seen firsthand the kind of havoc that can be wreaked by unlimited post editing and user-deletions by those select few others. With a forum with as large a user base as this and with so much traffic, those settings are definitely there for a good reason ;-)

Ok. So how would one wreak havoc by being able to delete only their own posts? Not trying to be a pain in the azz here or beat a dead horse but I really just can't seem to imagine a scenario where that ability would cause problems.

deleting a post does not mean it was not seen, if you made a mistake just edit it and that's it

the editing time for posts is 48 hrs - that, in most cases, should be long enough to edit or delete by blanking out the post.
as to wreaking havoc by being able to edit after that time, it's not likely but it could really disturb or alter the context of a discussion.

If the first post is deleted, the entire thread is automatically deleted.

If the first post is substantially edited, it can turn all subsequent posts into gibberish and make those authors look stupid.

If a member is having a bad day, decisions they make can both annoy other members and wreck threads. Basically, you need to decide if your posts says what you meant within a few minutes (or if it should be there at all), so that others are not inconvenienced, because a forum like this is a group concern not just about the OP, and also very busy.

On some forums the edit limit is set to one hour (or less), and it needs to be - otherwise threads are completely wrecked. The edit time is extremely long here - too long perhaps, as it can make work for others - but it seems to work as the mods do not complain about it. Self-deletion of posts (and therefore threads) is not really a viable option. Anything can spark an argument round here, and post/thread deletes would be a guaranteed firestarter.

On the other hand it might be fun to introduce an option in The Outside whereby members could delete a post by another, maybe by 10 votes or something. It's mayhem in there anyway...

I see your point roly. Still doesn't make sense though. If I start a thread I should be able to delete it or edit it. However, there would be some kind of notation on the post that it was edited and when. If the thread was deleted, nothing would be there to cause a problem so that would be that. Just MHO. I guess I'll never know :)
