From what I've gathered in reading up on this particular issue, it's better to plug the charger in first, then put the batts in..this allows the charger to get it's act together before it has the battery to contend with. Charger's transformers/capacitors etc. need to electrically acclimate and be working together before they can properly and safely charge a batt, and asking a charging system to do that while simultaneously hitting it with a (sometimes huge) load from a batt can cause problems or even malfunction.

As always, if I'm wrong someone please correct me!

I was questioning this in the other forum post and did not carry on the debate since a most technical explanation was tabled by DaveP. His reasoning and logic is non questionable from an electrical perspective. That said many of the current chargers (afaik) are of the switch mode variety so this raises other questions (no bulky transformers, etc). In my view it makes no discernible difference which order it is done in, but Fsck I think has made a good (and nicely worded) way of looking at it - allows the charger to get it's act together.

If you unsure plug the charger in first and battery thereafter.
