eGo-T 2 upgrade battery mod question

I'm thinking of getting one of these to have around as a backup battery device. I am able to get it as complete unit with joyetech battery or I could put it together in separate parts allowing me to pick a different battery. The model I'm looking at has the black button on the control head. My questions are:
1. am I further off ordering in parts so I can use a different battery then the stock joyetech one that typically come with it and if yes, what would be a good choice of battery to get for it
2. if I buy order with a diff battery, can I still use the reg joye battery charger that screws into the top of the control head that is possible with the stock battery and is advertised as a charging option. I realize charge time is probably forever charging like this but thinking might do in a jam or until I get a proper independent charger for the 18650 battery.

as a side note I'm thinking also about getting a spare controller head along with it to keep as a spare. your comments and opinions are appreciated. thanks in advance!

I started with the red AW IMR 18650s purchased separately myself when I got my first mod, same for the charger. If you can get AW IMRs from Joyetech, I'd consider purchasing from them. Some mod users are very particular about the brand of cells they run (and I'm one of them).

I would recommend purchasing a charger designed for 18650s at the same time you purchase the batterys (I assume you would get two)?

In a pinch, the ego charger *should* be ok to charge this cell while in the mod, but I'd avoid that personally if possible. The main reason is the fairly affordable prices for dedicated 18650 chargers.

You never can go wrong with extra parts "in case .....", picking up another head is a good idea. While you're at it, if you purchased two batts from the get-go you are only one tube away from a 2nd backup mod (if that appeals to you).

The cost of duplication gets less and less once you get the basics (cells, charger, etc).

I have 4 of these used daily here. 2 each of the old control heads, 2 each new control heads. (Wife and I have 2 systems each and VAMO's)
The new control heads (as wide as a standard 6ml tank in diameter, welled 510/eGo threading connection) will take the eGo usb charger, although it may not always sit properly and charge.
The old control heads (plainly topped carto sized diameter with a visible 510/eGo threading connection) will use the usb charger with no problems.

Also, the new control head extends deeper into the battery casing. I can use button topped ICR 18650's (2200mAh) in the old control heads, yet cannot use them in the new style, unless I unscrew the bottom cap few turns.
The Joytech flat top 2200 ICR 18650's are the best batteries for use with the eGo-T Upgrade Battery Mod, either control head. (It was designed for these batteries, although others will work just fine)

I recommend that you get a charger that can handle the 18650 batteries. The usb chargers seem to dislike hanging from your tower ports, or if plugged into your laptop, can be knocked around and that can't be good for the charger or battery.

thanks for the replies! for this mod would protected or non protected batteries be best? My supplier does not have the new flat top heads in stock yet and wondering if i'm better off to wait til they come in. Do you think the flat top (newest heads) are better in any way then the older ones? I think i read that when the original ones first came out they were pretty flakey and many needed to be replaced. I wonder if i should wait until the newer versions of control head have been out for a while longer.

After waiting for my vendor to restock the new control heads I finally inquired as to when they would be available. I was informed that they are bringing in a new version & the current one (the one I was waiting for) has been discontinued. If I were you, I'd just get a back -up batt & charger & wait for the new version to come out.

I'm currently using the Panasonic IMR18650CH & am very pleased. Good luck to you & enjoy.

BTW...having backups & backups to your backups is always a good idea....

As far as I know, this is into it's 3rd generation.. The "black" button started on Gen 2, the flattop is Gen 3 and they both use the same circuit and button., just a different "cover" to hold it all together. Either works great. Best part, tubes and controls can be bought separately for under $10 each. The extended white button is Gen 1 and may still be the same as Gen 2 with a button change.. IDK..

thanks. I think if one already has a charger and battery anyways this is an inexpensive backup to have kicking around. My vendor sells the heads and tubes separate as well as a working unit with joytech battery incl and was wondering if i would be further off buying it in pieces and using maybe a better battery then the stock one which can be ordered together. So protected or non protected batteries (18650) for these? I'm thinking non protected \ IMR type are best for this mod..

I bought complete with Joyetech non protected batteries for about 20 bucks. However in hindsight I think buying w/o is best. I also bought 2600 AW IC protected & they last longer - almost two days. Next time I'll buy the Panasonic NCR18650B 3400 mah. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the tube - just in case. I use the ego standard charger - it takes about three hours appx.

The control heads gen - 2 are a problem. They change from non regulated to regulated without asking - lol. I'm curious if the new gen-3 flat top control heads fair any better. If they in fact use the same control unit then I'd pay more to have the same failure!

BTW the longer protected batteries fit fine if they are flat tops. I kind of doubt the button top protected would fit but have not tried them.

Where do y'all buy tubes & control heads at a reasonable price? Right now most suppliers are out of stock or there expensive from the ones that have them.
