I got a 5 pack of these babies on Saturday, and have been far less than thrilled. I am using it on my eGo (when I feel the need to be frustrated), and every time it's both too "airy" and it continues to leak at the threaded end. I have not had the guts to buy a syringe yet from the pharmacy, so filled it drop by drop from the connector end with 20 drops.

Are these just a disappointing gizmo? Or am I doing something wrong to get too much air on the inhale and 'way too much leaking?

What brand? Single or dual coil? I've found the SmokTech dual coils have worked awesomely. The Bauway have worked okay, but they don't take multiple fills well for some reason and the construction is poor. The draw is also airier on them. The eGo Mega dual coils have been awesome so far. Also, while I think it's okay to fill from the battery end, most fill from the top, and if need be add a couple of drops to the battery end just to make sure the bottom is wet. That may be the cause of your leaking. If the end cap is silicone rubber you should be able to pop it off with a paperclip or toothpick. If it's glued in there like some I've heard, you'll need a syringe.

If you filled without a syringe, that's your problem. The ego cartos are completely different than a typical carto. The end pieces need removed, a seal needs to be pierced and then fill through a teeny hole w/syringe. The xls hold about 2 mls. Trying to fill drop by drop through the batt end will never get you there.
There are some good utube vids on how to fill. I'd link you but can't from here. Try doing a search
