This thing is making me crazy! I'm using the Melo5 tank it came with, 0.6ohm coils at 20-25 watts, the tank is full, the battery is charged, and it works fine for a few hours then it starts throwing the "dry hit protection" and won't put out anything. I turned it off last night to save the battery, the coil was put in yesterday morning, and first thing this morning it starts doing it again. I am so frustrated!! I emailed the eleaf people and they said they'd never had a dry hit protection error. I don't want to use the 0.15 ohm coils with 6mg juice, that's too strong for me. Funny thing is, it will work fine for a few hours, even most of the day sometimes, until it doesn't. Has anyone else had this issue with this thing? I've been vaping for at least 4 years, so it's not like I'm new to this.

I've used various models of iSticks for most of a decade and never had that message. I've had plenty of dry hits caused by wicks and coils I made and installed in various atomizers. I have had overtemp protection errors, but those were caused by a temperature mode setting too low for the coil and/or wattage I was using.

Apparently, the iStick Rim has no temperature control mode, but does have a temperature protection mode where it shuts down if the temp rises too high. Try turning the wattage down. It's telling you that the wattage you have selected for the coil you are using is causing it to go beyond their appointed temperature level. Try a higher resistance coil or turn down the wattage until the message stops appearing.

There is no temp control with the iStick Rim, it’s basic power only, which to be honest doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I rarely use temp control these days so power mode only keeps everything nice and simple. However, the Rim has new ‘Smart Dry-Burn Protection’… What is this you ask? – Eleaf State:

With the continuous upgrade of the chip, the dry-burn protection is added in the iStick Rim. It is based on auto temperature control technology which can perfectly avoid dry-burn issue and protect your taste.

That does make sense and I tried it just now. It was at 20w, throwing the dry hit protection every single time, even though it worked fine last night. So I turned it down to 19w. Same problem. It's sporadic, which is why it's so annoying. When I put a new coil in, it sets itself to 20w and works quite well for about half a day. I've tried turning it up. Same problem. The strange thing is that when I put my Melo2 tank with a 0.5ohm coil on the Rim battery it never has an issue. And if I put the Rim tank on an iJustS battery, same thing - no problem. The whole reason I bought the Rim was that my iJustS batteries are old and don't hold a charge all day anymore. It's very strange.

It looks like you were absolutely right. There was an update to the firmware that allows you to turn off the dry hit protection. And that's exactly what I have done. We'll see how it works. Thanks - I didn't think to look for an update.

That 'dry hit' feature sounds like it's all jacked up in the firmware.
