Just an example of the email I sent to all the New York politicians, hope this helps!
Dear Sirs and Madams,my name is Mark McArthur. As a 35 year 3-4 pack a
day smoker who has tried ever stop smoking program known to man, I think!
I would like to understand governments opposition to the new smoking alternative,
e-cigs or vaping ? A program that has worked well and has already been
successful getting thousands of people off real cigarettes and will
undoubtedly save lives.I understand more needs to be done on researching
this new product, but to immediately ban the sales to adults, is to say the least
extreme. Why all the fear of something that sounds so great? No harmful
gases, ZERO second hand smoke, that was at the root of the last 40 years
of government regulation.Obvious health improvements which will lower
health care cost. I won't quote all the info I have read in the limited
studies done, but I think you will agree, they are 100 times safer that
regular cigarettes. With all this info in mind, why would anyone be
against moving forward with this product and trying to encourage ALL
smokers to switch. Could it be big tobacco companies and their great
lobbing dollars at work? Maybe the government itself seeing the millions
in lost revenues? tobacco growers associations protecting their
investment? The pharmacy companies that will lose revenue on cessation programs
that have a 7% success rate? The hypocrisy is mind blowing to say the least.
I have just been an average Joe my whole life, never getting much involved
in politics, other than to read and watch daily and vote. Maybe I am missing
something but, can a product that has no illegal parts or substances be banned
from adults or should it be? If you would take some of your very limited time and
respond to me, I would greatly appreciate it. I would ask you to check out
a forum I am a member of (ecf link) and
read all the success stories that are being posted daily. You can feel the
joy in their post that finally something that will really work and allow
them to "kick the habit, and not die!" I know the objections to marketing
toward kids and I totally agree with you and it should be banned. I think
we control the sale of this product just like real cigarettes, no one
under 18. But, there is no reason to ban entire product in the whole
state from adults! I wished there had been something like this instead of the real
thing when I first started smoking I would be 100 times healthier.
Another thing that I found very insulting was to listen to the video of the house
vote on this issue a representative asked the sponsor of the bill, "what is
an electronic cigarette, I've never seen one." Then after a 30 second definition that
was very lacking in facts, he then voted to ban them! Please see the video at
the forum linked above.I think you will agree, this is not an example of how
laws should be passed. Every representative and Senator has an obligation to become
educated before voting, particularly when voting to ban the sale of something to adults.
If you don't have the time or want to do it, please reply to me and let me
know you at least got my email.
I appreciate your attention and look forward to communicating with you!
