Its a lil scary the way websites have been hacked in the pass couple of weeks. to give someone all your personal information including home address contact info and access to your paypal info just to be able to access and look at the classifies. there has to be an easier way to do this without putting members personal info in jerpordy all websites are vulnerable.....email verification sould be enough, most of us are adults......thats my opinion! Pleas feel free to comment on this very important subject i would like other opinions as well.........im sure plenty new comers have made an attempt to veiw that classfies seen the process and just decided to go to another website and yes i was one of them but im back because someting else brought me here, im still debating wether i feel comfertible enough to give all that information.......H3ll No!!!

Newbies tell me what you think and dont be shy!!!

Verified through paypal for the classifieds are to protect members from scammers. Email verification really isn't enough in my opinion. Most understand this need, through paypal verification ECF can basically hunt down the scammer and force them to either pay for what they recieved, or make them return the money they took without delivering the product. There are other websites out there that do not require verification, ask their members how often they have been scammed through the classifieds. I personally have not yet used the classifieds, however I feel safer knowing ECF is doing all it can to protect me from the big bad wolf (aka scammers).

Perhaps you should go read the process of getting conformation. There is no personal information given to the ecf. Remember folks who are new do NOT know. So perhaps find out WHY things are the way they are BEFORE you try to change them.

On that note, you will be VERY hard pressed to find folks here who object. Because this is in place, we are much safer from scammers.

Get your 20 posts, get verified and shop or don't. Your choice.

My theory is if a web site wants too much info from me I don’t use it.

If you don’t like the information collection policy here on the ECF to buy and sell, why don’t you just Not buy and sell here on the ECF?

I know someone mentioned it in this thread but....

You do realize you don't give ECF any information that you wouldn't give someone who you complete a paypal transaction with.

I don't really understand the problem. People are just so weird when it comes to the internet. I mean when you setup a phone with time warner or any other company you realize about 1000 telemarketers get your name, address and a bunch of other information? Do you shred all any mail that has your name on it? Plenty of identity theft happens at the garbage dump too.

They're not asking for your SSN, Mothers maiden name and a list of your bank accounts. Just a verified paypal account and home address. Geez.

This reminds me of my great aunt. She's all paranoid about buying anything online, including amazon since her credit card information will be on the internets(Oh noes). So she never does any online shopping and then the first time she goes on a trip to Mexico someone charges 6k worth of golf clubs on her account 2 days after she comes back.

Yeah, true. It is not like you are giving your whole identity away!

we got a call from our CC company asking if we had ordered hundreds of dollars of stuff from the gap and old navy. I guess the CC company called because we have never bought from those stores. it was my husbands cc which he did not use on line, but at resturants........ funny thing was that a few days after the CC company called us we received 2 big boxes...from gap and old navy. apparently the stores or the crook made a mistake and the purchases were sent to us. so the stores got their goods back and we hope the crook got caught. in other words, it happens all the time in the real world too ;
