Depending on the liquid (most dark or stronger) they can leave a slight smell but it barely lasts at the most 2-3 minutes. I know when I vape my clove (dark) liquid and the wife walks into my office she can smell it but when I stop and she comes back in around 5 minutes or so later she can't smell a thing. The smell is really a bad term as it isn't really a true scent. It isn't at all like burnt smoke or shisha smoke. When I vape my hummingbird (light) liquid no one at all can smell a thing unless I blow it near their nose and then its a slight hint of something but they can't finger it.

My daughter says the odor from mine makes her want a cookie (I vape vanilla or snickerdoodle mainly)! My kids are older now ,14 16 and 19, but it used to make me mad that i would go outside and they would follow me. I smoked outside to save them from my secondhand and they wanted or had to talk to me at that second right now mom. I am glad that any of that is no longer an issue and they are happy to not have to trail after me to talk to me now.

I don't know for sure but I would probably keep it away from the kids just to be safe. I don't find it as odorless as people claim it to be. My boyfriend is a non-smoker and he can definitely smell it in the air when I've been vaping, if I leave the room and come back in I can smell it too, but it's not at all nasty or objectionable like cigs, more of a faint perfume

It would absolutely depend on what you are vaping as far as leaving a smell.
Smells from vapor do not equate to so called "second hand smoke" as many people seem to believe.
There can be a very faint scent in the air seconds after you exhale but it quickly dissipates.
There is no "e-smoke" or "smoke" period left over from vaping.
Perfumes contain various oils hence the smell.
I would suggest anyone who thinks vaping somehow equates to "some version" of smoking or "e-smoking" really do some research and/or read the studies that are available from people other than those like the FDA and their cohorts.
Check out CASAA. org for factual information please!

I sincerely believe that the mass hysteria about second hand smoke is just that, hysteria. The research that supports negative effects of second hand smoke were not scientific and the mass media and special interest groups ran with it. Although being stuck in a car with a smoker with the windows closed is not a good thing, the overall effect of second hand smoke has been grossly exaggerated. In my opinion, and from what I've read over the years, that is.

That being said, I obviously have no worries about any effect second hand vaping might have. Just don't blow it in people's faces.

Couldn't agree more with this.

Regarding the ridiculously small trace amount of nicotine and food grade flavorings which one could absorb as second hand "vape", one could argue that there would be more danger from the odor of everyday cooking. Especially that nicotine loaded veggy, eggplant. Not to mention household cleaning agents, air fresheners, even the smell of artificially flavored cookie dough baking in the oven.

While the jury is still out on the effects of vaping on us vapers, in particular flavorings tested for safety for ingestion rather than inhalation, the risk from second hand vape has to be zilch in such miniscule trace amounts. JMHO FWIW

...my wife is a nurse and the hospital where she works has been on a militant anti-smoking kick for a while...they have even been threatening my wife's job over 3rd hand smoke ...ya know, the residue on your clothes/hair/etc...this is what finally drove us to PVs and vaping...talk about a lot to do about nothing!!!!!!!

Wow! As a non-smoker, but with a wife that smokes, I feel the hospital is pushing it a little too far. I'm all for anti-smoking laws, but . . .

even if it was proven to be totally harmless, I would not, and don't vape in front of my(or anyone's) kids. simply because its a habit(bad or not-debatable) that they don't need to be exposed to. kids have enough pressures on them to do things. why add to this by giving them the example?

actual analog smoking around kids is a HUGE pet peeve of mine! seeing my pregnant niece and her hub smoking in front of their 1 and 4 yr old kids the other day drove me nuts! years ago my 5 year olds soccer coach was smoking in front of all of them at a game. I was like WTF?! Now we do hockey and all the parents stand outside the door and smoke. yeah, thats an awesome thing to be doing in front of them and having this cloud of smoke for them to walk thru is just what they need. I want to tell them to move their lazy asses away from the damn doors!

I have smoked on and off for the past 35 years and my kids never had any idea that I smoked until the month before I switched to ecigs. even when they figured it out I never did it around them

sorry- I will step off my soapbox now. I was the worst ex smoker during the times that I did quit. looking down my nose at all the nasty smokers! LOL. I had to eat a little crow when I picked some up again!

I suffered through years of 2 hr drives up north with my dad smoking in the car with the windows closed. and I was already prone to car sickness. they did not give a crap. yelled at me if I opened the windows. parents were different back then:laugh:

As long as they don't directly contact the vapor there is no chance of harm. Vapor is NOTHING like smoke, it is NOT smoke because there is no combustion. The main constituent is PG which is completely safe. I vape around kids and non-smokers all the time with zero complaints. Of course, I make sure none of them directly contacts the vapor.....that's all you have to worry about....but even if they did, no harm done really. Vapor is not a floating cloud of carcinogens like smoke and nicotine is harmless at extremely low levels (non-carcinogenic).

The reason why I ask this question is that when I smoke normal cigarettes outside with a smoke jacket, my wife can smell that I smoked despite the fact that I washed my hands, used mouthwash, washed my face, etc.

Growing up in the early 70s in an Asian household, it would be common for the older folks to literally smoke into your face. Obviously, I don't want to do that to my children. Thus, my paranoia or healthy phobia in terms of being sterile.

With the little research out there, I would rather be better informed for the minor parts than just winging it.

Ironically, my Asian culture is about drinking hard and smoking. Unfortunately, my father, and grandfather both had strokes and high blood pressure, etc. Thus, my reasonable worry about side effects and thus my quitting.

Just the fact that you are concerned shows a great deal about you ! Congratulations on stopping smoking ! I have a lot of respect for you and the care you have for others around you . It sounds as if you are taking all the necessary steps to protect your loved ones and yourself good for you !

I too grew up in a home that was plagued with addiction to alcohol and tobacco . I chose to no longer drink or smoke myself and my youngest daughter is now 32 . Guess I am considered old school now ha ha .Good luck to you on this journey we call life !

Personally, I am 99.9% convinced that it is entirely safe. At the same time, I still don't do it around my kids. There's that 0.1% question still lingering in my brain (I don't think there's any way it could be even close to smoke as far as danger, but I'm not 100% certain that it's entirely safe, KWIM?), AND I also don't want to be doing something that *looks* like smoking in front of them. If I had smoked in front of them in the past that last part might not matter. But I hid smoking from them and I also hide vaping. It's partly embarrassment (and denial of my addiction) and partly not wanting to model smoking behavior to them.

You were a smoker right? No offense but criticizing other smokers is sort of like someone with 50 lbs to lose criticizing someone with 70 pounds to lose. To think that someone wouldn't know you smoked is just kidding yourself. You can smell a smoker a mile away. They might not have said anything, but they knew.
