Currently I have an 8/7 wrap with 28AWG Kanthal, metering at 1.25Ω, using a cotton wick. I would think that being used to a 1.5Ω atty that this would do it for me, but I can't seem to get it there. I have also tried 30AWG Kanthal with no real satisfaction. The vapor I'm getting is just ok, and there is no real warmth when drawing on this. One thing I've noticed is that my coils don't glow orange when hitting it, like it's not really heating up. I know that this should be able to satisfy me like the atty does. Do you have any suggestions?

Make sure your screws are tight. That coil should glow white hot when you dry burn it (remove the cotton wick.) If it's not glowing white hot, then there's a problem. Are you using AW IMR batteries?

EDIT: Also, dgmcfarrin is right.....too much cotton is not good. make a wick just thick enough to slide in pretty easily and touch the coils. Too much will choke the atty and cut off both vapor and flavor. I told someone (and it's true) I can get at least two (maybe 3) wicks out of the tip of a regular Q-tip. That should give you some idea of how much cotton to use.

I would take 2-3 wraps off that...I think you'll get the warmth and the vapor you're looking for. I know that I used to love 1.5 ohm attys before rebuildables, and now I wrap .8 ohm coils for my Grand. So, maybe just shoot for lower ohms to get the same effect. It doesn't look like too much cotton.

Thanks, I'll try that. I re-wicked for that pic with a smaller amount of cotton. Will a AW IMR 14500 drive a .8Ω coil?

Cotton wicks juice very quickly. Creating a warm vape will be hard since cooler juice replenishes the wick quickly when you're vaping. If you want a warm vape, then SS mesh is better. The mesh gets very hot and little heat from the coil is used to create vapor and more into heating the vape. If you get the cotton wick hot somehow you will get a warmer vape.
Silica will get you a warm vape too, but you'll likely also get a burnt taste.

I think it was the 14500 whose max. continuous discharge rating wanted a coil @ or over 1.1Ω.

Just checked; yep, its a 4 Amp rating. This would go a long way to explaining why your wire isn't glowing very quickly. I had thought that (I looked at your pic &) an 8/9 wrap was a bit much anyway. Its probably a combination of things. The battery (ESPECIALLY if not fully charged), a little too much wire (or too thick a gauge), and a little loose on the micro wraps contacting.

In addition to wrapping a coil with couple of less wraps, I would position it so it is a little further away from the posts. Just be careful that the coil is not out so much that it could contact the cap or rim of the atty.

The amount of cotton in your pic looks good.
