I've been playing around with FA's Bread Crust flavor. It hasn't worked out the way I first hoped.

My original plan was to make a PBJ, with Bread Crust, Peanut Butter and Concord Grape. The idea looks good on paper, and maybe it's doable, but the right combination has eluded me. I gave up when I finally ran out of Peanut Butter.

So I decided to go for a buttered toast flavor, using Capella's Butter. That combo came closer to what I envisioned than the PBJ, but so far after the first couple of attempts, it just hasn't quite clicked.

The Bread Crust flavor itself is curiously strong. I've used it at strengths from 2% all the way down to .25%, and even at the low end of that range it tends to overpower whatever else is in the mix. But that's not the major problem that I'm having. The real problem seems to be that it just doesn't blend well. It tastes just like its namesake on it's own, but as soon as you add something to it, in almost any proportion, the flavor becomes what can only be described as "kitty litter".

Have you any thoughts or suggestions, ECF? Has anybody else played with this flavor?

For the pb&j, did you mix the 3 flavors separately first to where they seemed true to their name (or as good as possible), then blend them (starting with small amounts) trying to get a good balance? That's what I have been doing and so far has worked for me. Some blends you can even try on your atty first i.e. 1 drop pb, 1 drop jelly, 1 drop bread-crust, just to see if its in the ballpark. Hope that helps, but I'm sure it doesn't.

There's a peculiar effect I call flavor cancellation. Some flavors devour each other. The Perfumers Apprentice "Crust" does that too, but many others do as well. Banana flavors for instance are very tricky. FA "Cookie" I think has some bread crust type in it, as it too tends to easily turn blends into "kitty litter". It takes practice, forget "on paper", and work gradually with tiny amounts. Personally, I think unless you set a celing % for total flavoring, I use 5%, you can quickly get into levels that are potentially hazardous. Only a handful of flavoring molecules have been tested for inhalation toxicity, it's clearly safer to keep the flavoring to a minimum. I find that some combinations just aren't feasible without ridiculous amounts, and we turned to vaping to reduce risks, so why go there?

Yes, I did indeed try this approach. In fact, that's how I determined the problem I was having was caused by an unfortunate interaction between flavors. The Bread Crust was fine on its own, but problems developed when other flavors were added. For all I know, a different vendor's formula for Grape and Peanut Butter may well have worked.
