This one also caught my eye tonight. Courier-Post Online posted this note a couple fo days ago...

E-cigarettes, or electronic cigarettes, are the latest alternatives to cigarettes,
mimicking the taste, feel and sometimes look of a cigarette.

Though marketed for years as a tool to help people quit smoking -- saving them their money and possibly their lives -- some have had trouble adjusting to the tobacco-free product, and not just smokers. Many bars and workplaces have been slow to accept them.

If you've had an e-cigarette experience, contact staff writer Steve Wood at (856) 486-2474 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (856) 486-2474 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or swood@courierpostonline.com for an upcoming story examining the science, scope and stigma of this smokeless product.

I plan on emailing the paper probably tomorrow. Might be a good chance from those who have much more tact and in the know to write some information. Maybe, just maybe, we can head off some of the misinformation before it gets printed.

Sounds a little "strange" to me
Anyone else get that impression?

In the world of journalism, when a reporter pitches a stoy to the editor, s/he is asked, "What's your slant?" Before pitching the story the reporter usually has gathered some information and has idea of the story's conclusion.

A bad journalist will ignore all the data that contradicts his or her theory (don't hold it against journalists---we have seen some scientists do the same thing.) A good journalist will rethink his conclusion if bombarded with a lot of verifiable facts that point toward a different conclusion, and write the story accordingly.

I attached a copy of the article "Electronic cigarettes as a harm reduction strategy for tobacco control: A step forward or a repeat of past mistakes?" to my email. I wrote about the "scientific research" written by Prue Talbot and pointed out that in each case, she drew a conclusion that did not follow from her data. I ranted about the FDA's disinformation on e-cigarettes. I summarized the results of the three surveys of users (Etter, Tobacco Harm Reduction, and CASAA).

What the journalist does with this information is up to him, but IMHO the story that e-cigarettes work and haven't harmed anyone is actually much more intriguing than the same old "this is new and it might be dangerous" story.

Yeah, I did too. Like the FDA working undercover, or—more likely—another camouflaged ad by the disreputable Free Trial! e-cig vendors in our midst.

In the end, it's probably legit. Not the New York Times Online, mind you, but legit. At worst, it might be a lot like FDA-approved Chantix: ineffective, but harmless (Except for all that suicide stuff).

"...some have had trouble adjusting to the tobacco-free product, and not just smokers. Many bars and workplaces have been slow to accept them." "...and stigma of this smokeless product."

These are the two parts that bother me... and It might have to do with a lot of the irresponsible e-cig distributors saying that you can vape anywhere!! There is an ad for one shown on TV all of the time here in the Los Angeles area, and yet our anti-smoking laws are getting tougher all of the time... I think he might be going more for the angle of bad experiences people and/or business owners might have had with vapers.

I was always considerate to people and my surroundings as a smoker, and I continue to do so as a vaper... "Never vape where you shouldn't smoke" is the Golden Rule to me!! We have started having Vape Meets with our Social Group here in SoCal and ALWAYS check with the mangement of the establishment first before choosing a location... Someone shot a video of our last one and I am going to see if I can send that along with my email to this writer... it was held at a popular restaurant chain in their outdoor patio, and one of the waitresses even left with enough stuff people put together for her to make the switch to e-cigs, too!!

UPDATE: +1 for e-cigs!!! Before posting this, I noticed another article in a side-bar on their website, and it is the same one asking for responses, only the title and some of the wording has been changed!! I guess he DOES listen after all... WooHoo!!

Why I say... "I smell a RAT"

A reporter who can't express himself clearly

The article reads like controlled confusion. The illusion is a reporter gathering data for an upcoming report. However, after reading his embarrassing & confusing article...No one really knows anything more than "he's looking for input" but what kind of input?

The reporters article
(which is duplicated on other Courier Post pages with different titles)...

Reads like text from the "Handbook for the Recently Deceased"
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
