I like the way the Sunwing spokesman has a big old cryfest in front of the press afterwards.

"They wouldn't even tell us where they hid the other cigarettes after we landed the jet and had them arrested. We had to call out an aeronautical engineer to do a safety inspection of the whole plane, they're still out there looking for residue. We have computers to track these terrorists, I will make personally sure they never step foot on another Sunway plane for the rest of their lives even if it means I have to visit every ticket agency myself. Boo hoo, sob"

Smoking in that bathroom set off a smoke alarm, the captain nor the crew could be the judge of whether the alarm was set off by cigarette smoke or an actual fire somewhere in the plane. Just in case of both happening at once, they can't be sure 100%, the captain took the safest action by setting the plane down somewhere to inspect it.
(I'm only using logical reasoning, I have no clue about actual procedures, if I'm wrong correct it).

Besides the plane in question, other planes and the airport in question also have to change their flight plan and schedual, creating more hazards for human error. I don't think you can be safe enough with the lives of 100-200 people in the balance.

About the people in question, they got furious when they were told by the crew to stop it right? Maybe they were getting close to physical violence towards the crew and the captain thought it better to get these people off the plane ASAP. They ruin everything for everyone no matter where they go, maybe this'll teach them a lesson.

However
I really don't get the part where they had to search for hidden cigarettes like contraband.
