figuring things out

I have been smoking a pipe for about 16 years and have been trying to quit for about the last 2years with no successes. About 6 months ago it was suggested to me to try e-cigs. I would smoke a 12 ounce bag of tobacco in about a week.

On September 5 I went in to a local shop Not knowing a thing (Not having found ECF yet)and bought a puffs platinum series e-cig kit, with some juice from Orbit (Wild cherry).

I did not have any plan on how I was going to quit the pipe just figured I would start vaping and keep with the pipe for the time being. I even bought a bag of tobacco with the kit. That bag lasted me about 3 weeks . bought a seconded bag and that has lasted me a month and still have about a quarter of it left with no real desire to smoke the pipe.

About 3 weeks ago I went and picked up a Kanger Tech Mini protank 2. Then last Saturday picked up a new 1300Mah battery that is variable voltage 3.2 to 4.8 volts. I will ask this 1 question the coils in my Protank 2 is 1.8 ohms where should I be setting the voltage on the battery?

I googled puffs e-cigs a few days after buying the kit and that is how I found ECF, Signed up and have been reading ever since. There is so much more information on vaping than I could have ever dreamed of. With all the new terms(Still trying to learn them) and everything I almost feel like I jumped in to rocket science LOL.

I have written enough here for the moment I have a few other questions but will save them for later,

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim, and welcome!

One common suggestion is to take the value of the coil and add 2 to it, so with that 1.8 + 2, a reasonable voltage would be 3.8. The risk of starting with too high a voltage is the chance of burning the wick. Once it's charred, you'll not get rid of the bad taste until you change to a new coil / head, and the juice in the clearo may be contaminated with the bad taste as well...

Or just start out near the lowest setting, going up a little at a time until it gives the vape you want. Different flavors may require different settings.

Jim, welcome. I concur with others here to start at the low(est) settings on your battery and work your way up till it begins to taste a bit dry or you sense the flavor is being reduced. Then move back down and you'll know the sweet spot. As others mentioned your vape habits (how hard you draw etc, and the type of eliquid being used) are variables that will effect the best settings.

The Mini Protank 2 is a good choice, in my opinion. I had a lot less success with the full sized Protank, but my mini Protank was always reliable. I'm also finding out the real potential of the protank once you rebuild your own coils.

I was hesitant to build my own coils for a while but I finally tried it yesterday and WOW. So much better than the coils put out by the factory. I know starting out there's too much information to absorb......but feel free to PM me if you get to the point where you're ready for the Protank to come alive to full potential. It costs almost nothing to get started building coils, and if you find out that it's not for you, then you are out almost nothing.

For now, I just recommend when your Protank coils die out, keep those coil heads for later possible use. I'm about 8 weeks into vaping and am really sold on rebuilding those Kanger coils now.

Good luck...glad to hear you are on your way to kicking the pipe!

Hello and welcome to the forum Jim. Glad to have you here!:)

Great setup! I too have mini Protanks (and the Protank v2 which is a little larger) and still use them. When Kanger came out with the new Aerotanks I did choose to add the aerotank base to my existing mini Protanks (instead of buying new tanks) as I wanted more airflow AND I really did like using the single coils. The new mini Aerotanks used dual coils. Below is a pic of the aerotank base.

Looks like you are getting some great advise from members. I will just leave you with some additional links regarding your mini Protank. If you want better performance out of your Kanger coils I suggest you periodically clean AND dry burn them. When they finally don't work well (or at all) replace them (but save the non-functioning ones). You may at some point want to learn to rebuild them.

Thanks for all the reply's lots of great information. I have been for the most part setting the volts at 3.2 (The lowest setting) but set it up around 4 volts for about an hour on Monday night and again last night. it did get warm to the touch but not hot, but at the end of the hour it would fire for about a second then the light on battery would flash (White flashes) several times then shut off. I it is possible that this is just the battery was dead and needed charging, but wonder if could be just to warm and need to just cool off. I am going to use the battery at 4 volts to day and see what happens.

Thanks

Jim

Try adjusting in 0.2 volt increments. Sometimes that's all it takes to bring out - or burn - the flavor.

Sounds like the over time alert, the multi-flash. Release the button and good to go. Most regulated mods have a time-out to prevent overheating, they just shut down until you release the fire button.

Low voltage, after a few flashes it will shut down, and won't fire again. The procedure to turn them on will likely work, but if you actually try to fire a topper, it's probably just going to shut off again.

It will totally shut off I turn it back on and it shuts off again.

What kind of battery are you using? Is it a knockoff? You may just have a bad battery.

I am using it now, both times it happened I had been using it off and on for over several hours. and then turned the voltage up and vapid heavy on it before getting the flashing light.

I put it on the charger and went to bed, it has been fine today but have not had the voltage turned up.

edit to add:

The name on the battery is Gravity I am thinking it is some kind of private label type of thing, As an internet search did not bring up any thing except a few posts here on ECF.

Sounds then like it was discharged. Long hours at high wattage, which is what you have at 4 volts on the 1.8 coil, will drain most batteries in less than the "average" time.

I generally don't recommend charging unattended, or asleep. While rare, considering all the batteries in use, a catastrophic failure in the charger or battery (or wall wart for the charger) can be dealt with more quickly if awake than if the smoke alarm gets you up. :2c:

You really should have at least two, anyway. One to use while the other charges. And in case of a failure or breakage.

Welcome to ECF and congrats Jim! Start on the lowest setting an work up. Take a few hits at each setting. When it starts to taste a little burnt, back it down a notch or two and you're good to go.

Wisdom. Also, there are some really good naturally-extracted tobacco flavors available including various varieties of pipe tobacco! Check the general ejuice forum!
