Finally Did It..

My days with tobacco started back in high school when a cousin of mine offered me a chew back in 1985. A couple years later my gums looked like hell so I switched over to cigarettes to give my gums a break. Since then I smoked 2 packs a day, every day, since 1987, for over 20 years. I was a hardcore smoker for sure, the type that didn't try to limit myself or go without a smoke if I wanted one. In social/bar settings I'd chain smoke for hours upon end, doing more than 3 packs a day on party weekends or long drives in the car.

I tried quitting smoking twice- once in 1993 when I went cold turkey for 3 days before I couldn't stand it any longer, and once in 2007 when I used nicotine gum for 3 days before my gums hurt too bad and I was still intensely craving a cigarette so I gave in.

Back in 2009 me and a buddy bought e-cigs from a local gas station. They were THE worst. I sucked on mine constantly for about 3 hours before it quit working, all the while going outside to smoke tobacco between vapes. I swore it was the biggest waste of money ever, but luckily my buddy (even though he had an equally bad experience with that particular product) believed in the concept and he continued to keep trying different e-cigs since then.

A couple months ago that buddy said he finally found a decent e-cig and I should try it out. I refused because my experience was so bad with my first unit. Luckily again my buddy kept pestering me to try a new e-cig and I finally gave in on July 17th.

My buddy hooked me up with an eGo and a variety of juices. I picked up the eGo kit on July 17th about 1 pm in the afternoon, vaped all day then tried one tobacco cig that night to see if I felt like I was missing anything. I smoked about half the analog and went back inside my house to vape. Since then I have only vaped with absolutely no cravings for a tobacco cig. I have been using Melon Explosion 36 mg and Grandpas Mix 24 mg for juice. I have the half pack of tobacco smokes in my car from July 17th, but thankfully haven't had the urge to have one. I've cleaned and put away all my old ashtrays, and I seemed to have lost all my old lighters. LOL

I am still amazed that I have quit tobacco, I thought it was impossible for me and I'd be doing it for the rest of my life. vaping tastes so much better, my lungs and body already feel so much better, and most of all I am just happy I was able to get away from freak'n tobacco.

Every smoker I see I just want to go up and tell them they don't have to be slaves to tobacco anymore, but being a long time hardcore smoker I remember how ticked off I was when anyone even remotely suggested I stop, so I vape away and hope they get curious enough to ask about it.

I've been lurking the ECF forum the last couple weeks and have learned a ton. The information on vaping can be quite overwhelming to a noob like me, ECF has helped make a lot of sense out of those mountains of info.

Yes, I'm a bit verbose, but that's my story and I'm stick'n to it! Can't wait for my 1 month anniversary and then my 1 year, and yes, I'm going to have a big 1 year party because quitting tobacco is that big of a deal to me. Can't wait to see what changes my body goes through, and more importantly can't wait to live the longest, fullest life possible.

Yay for you!!!! I know how you feel....we all do! I never thought I'd ever be able to quit....and here I am and it's been OVER a year for me now! Amazing, isn't it?? I know what you mean about wanting to preach to every smoker you see....I feel like a walking commercial for e-cigs! It's hard to resist trying to convert everyone. But I don't....I also remember how mad it made me when anyone even suggested I might need to quit. :)

Congratulations and welcome to ECF. One year will go by quickly....

Thanks for the welcome dormouse, nice being around other people that have seen the light of vaping.

In my "real" life I work with high end batteries, all Lithium based- mainly Lithium Cobalt, Lithium Manganese, and Lithium Iron Phosphate, in both soft pack polymer and hard cell ion. Hopefully I can use some of my knowledge of batteries to help other vapers in the future, we'll see. And... I have a West Mountain CBA, can't wait to put some of the cells used in vaping on it and see how they stack up.

Thanks for the welcome clark and JC.

My buddy bought a lot of bad gear and tasted a lot of bad juice in the name of research, I am lucky that I had him around, I wouldn't have quit without him thats for sure. Btw, my buddy has been completely tobacco free for around 5 months now. He was as hardcore of a smoker as I was, maybe even more so, so when I saw that he had quit, I knew at the very least I might have a good shot at it. Because I knew how hardcore of a smoker he was (he was at least 2 packs a day) I knew that vaping had to have come a long way since the first units we had bought. If someone I didn't know had tried to get me to try vaping again I most likely wouldn't have believed them.

congrats and welcome capitan! im glad you found a device that works. and thanks to your buddy that peer pressured you and never gave up on his own journey to vaping. ECF has an abundance of info and im also thankful for its existence. once again welcome and keep on vaping!

i have found the best way to forget about smoking is to stay active in ECF and all that it has to offer.

Thanks for the welcome Wendallb, december, Olef, Nicko, washvap, and Jonny, mucho appreciated!

When I got my second e-cig a couple weeks ago I honestly didn't have it in my mind I was going to quit tobacco as I thought that was impossible for me. But... a couple hours into it, because vaping was so much different than nic gum or trying to go cold turkey, I suddenly realized I had a good shot at it. Now I am only a couple weeks in, but I just can not see a circumstance where I would ever go back to tobacco. I'm so confident that I've declaring myself a non-smoker already, something that I would never have done (even years in) if I could have stopped on gum. Every moment while trying to quit before was spent on how much I missed cigarettes, but that is not the case while vaping, all I can think about is how dern glad I am to no longer smoke!

The strangest thing happened two days ago... I had to hop in my car and run to the quickie mart and pick up a gallon of milk for my son. After I got home with the milk I realized not only had I not vaped during my little excursion, but I had also forgotten to even take my e-cig with me! Back in my smoking days I would have NEVER have forgotten my smokes, and while the trip to the gas station and back is under 10 minutes, I would have smoked at least 2 cigs. I never went anywhere in my car without lighting up as soon as I got in, and right before I got out. So while I like vaping, it doesn't rule my every move like tobacco cigs used to, what a great feeling.

Yeah watch out for fellow stubbourn smokers..I've been ridiculed by plentybefore...Like I smoked for 5 years then all of a sudden I stop and I'm a show off, ..., and I think I'm so much cooler and better than they are e.e...I've learned not to smoke it by groups of regular smokers, i kid you not a couple months ago, a fight actually broke out downtown over it and my buddy ended up getting arrested...Let them cough their lungs out, even if you don't force it on them they'll still find a problem with you

Thanks for the welcome Stosh!

Tim, ya, from what I've read on here some smokers are very anti-vaping. I know I was after I first tried one 2 years ago. 2 years ago I thought I'd have been better off just smoking that $20 bill than having spent it on the POS disposable I had! LOL Thankfully my buddy never gave up on me, and the technology and liquid has come a long ways.

If I do come across any angry smokers I'm just going to be honest with them- I smoked 2 packs a day for over 20 years, I didn't think I could ever quit, but now I am ecstatic to be vaping. Hopefully they'll be like me and come around to vaping at some point when they are ready.

Congratulations, and welcome! It's such a wonderful feeling when you realize that you simply don't care about smoking anymore even though it was such a huge part of your life for so many years. Yes, I'll say it...feels like a miracle, yeah?

My buddy bought a lot of bad gear and tasted a lot of bad juice in the name of research, I am lucky that I had him around, I wouldn't have quit without him thats for sure. Three cheers for your buddy! It's so awesome that he was so persistent in finding the right gear, and that he cared enough about you to get you to try it when he'd found what worked for him. Take him out for dinner and thank him!

Oh, I do remember that! It wasn't so long ago that if I made it out to my car without smokes, I'd turn right back around and stomp back up the stairs to get them, cursing myself the whole time for 1) forgetting them in the first place and 2) needing them so much.

Vaping is much better!

Stick around. ECF is very helpful to keep you motivated and to answer whatever questions come up along your way.

Congratulations Captain! I quit smoking for 3 years and then about a year ago I was dumb enough to think one little cigarette won't hurt. Well as all of us addicts know it did and I spent 10 more months killing myself with analogs. I have been vaping for 3 months now and I could not be happier with the results. Feeling great and have no desire at all to smoke. In fact I truly believe that if vaping were suddenly gone I would not go back. I can now go several hours without vaping and have none of the old nic fits that I had with analogs.
