So one of them finally slipped up and said what they all have better thinking. It looks like they might have to figure out how to actually run a government. Plus they won't need those tax dollars, they can just get rid of all those anti groups they hand mountains of funding. I guess the anti people will have to get real jobs like the rest of us. ;)

Back when I smoked, I was traveling in the UK for business. I commented to a coworker on the insane prices for a pack of cigarettes there. He said that it is to dissuade smoking, but if everybody in England actually QUIT smoking, the country would probably go bankrupt.

A bit over the top, but the tobacco Manufacturers Association reports that the UK government brings in around £12 billion a year through cigarette excise tax and VAT. Certainly not enough to bankrupt the nation with a ~£600 billion budget, but it is a substantial amount of money nonetheless...

Placing a SIN TAX on e-cigarettes is ... yet another government over-reach
into our private lives.

Our government will "Target" and "Punish" anyone who
opposes their opinions and agendas.

E-cigarettes are saving millions of lives
and shouldn't be placed in the same
category of cigarettes.

E-cigarettes is a technology ... not a tobacco product
regardless of agenda driven propaganda.

The FDA can't kill this technology with all its regulations.
It's not a product ... it's a wildly diverse and popular technology.
Sorry FDA ... Go back to harassing Americans who choose
to to eat natural foods and take natural supplements and
do not want to consume Monsanto's GMO foods.

You can more or less double that figure, to take account of the massive savings the state makes, linked to smoking. As the UK has full medical and social support for all, it means the state has to pay for smoker sickness costs (medical care is free for all), but they save on social support such as pensions for those who die early (all receive a state pension, or other payments if they are not entitled to a pension).

The amount of money saved by not paying out for pensions and all the other social services for the 100,000 people a year who die on average 8 years early (according to estimates) is considerable, and probably equal to the amount earned in tobacco tax revenue. Smoking makes the state up to 2% of annual earnings. It may not sound much, but in the current economic climate, tens of billions is enough to count. When it takes a 50% hit due to ecigs, the pain will certainly be felt. In fact it will be felt by 2020, when 25% of smokers are expected to have switched - if not sooner.

People are already sitting up and taking notice of the drop in cigarette sales.
