Hey there!

I could use some helpful advice since I'm kinda new. I'm trying to find a common denominator as to why most fruity flavors I've tried tend to vape a
pretty bad taste. It's like a combination of burnt electrical, wet dog, and laundry hamper.

I've already looked at the vg/pg factoring. That didn't seem to come into play but looking further into VG make-up it could? Since VG can be made with either Palm oil or Coconut oil as the base ingredient.

On most everything food related I tend to avoid coconut or vanilla foods in general and thats where I get the burnt electrical note from. Something burnt mixed with coconut. And thats with a liquid that should be Pineapple as the dominant flavor. It could be in either an iClear16 tank or Igo-W atty (both using Silica wicks).

Another factor unknown to me at present is if the sweeteners used in the flavors I've tried and have this same common dislike, are mixes that use artificial sweeteners like aspartame or other *tame derivatives.

With the exception of two fruit blends (mbv thug juice and mpv very cherry berry) I just get a nasty taste on all I've tried so far, whether premium or economy listed brands.

Anyone happen to know where I could be going wrong or maybe how to chase this down to start with? Many Thanks!

Everyone's taste is personal. I generally only vape fruit/berry flavors and love them. Some, especially my first couple of DIY batches, come across a bit weak in flavor, but I have not experienced the problems you describe. I, personally, do not like coconut and anything with coconut in it, so I have avoided those flavors.

I hope you find some that you like...

Ill add this for ya. When I first started vaping I absolutely hated the fruity flavors and leaned toward the sweeter flavors, banana creme pie, butter rum, etc... However, I gave a self made mix of melon madness I got from Nude Nicotine a try. Now I didnt steep it so the the first tank rt after I mixed it was just perfumy, nasty. So I let it sit. After reading about steeping I thought Id give it another shot. Omg. I couldnt believe something so nasty could become so good. Since then Ive played with it, mixing other fruits, tads of this and that and now have a juce I am sooo in love with.

So, yeah steeping, but hey, I didnt like anything fruity Id bought from local vape store and the blueberry and watermelons were their best sellers. I kinda doubt Ive come up with some super awesome magical mix but I rather attribute it to a change in taste. Yeah, 4 mos after quitting smoking my tastes have changed. Imagine that.

Its funny that you mention this as I've been reading thru other posts on steeping and it only slapped me in the face that the two fruits that I liked and were my first juices to arrive. I diligently overnite open capped steeped them. And they were and still are good. Once I got an order of Boba's Bounty and have been vaping every day and all day. Straight out of the mail. I'm going to overnite open cap steep all these I'm having trouble with and still let sit for a day or two. Good call!

I have a ultrasonic cleaner to warm bathe these as well, if anyone has a way to protect the bottle labels while in the little tub I'd love to hear how your doing it. Sometimes my common sense gear slips outta gear. :)

Its kinda strange, steeping is. Some things wanna steep a few days, others want a few weeks. Im finding tobaccos, especially nets take want the longest. One thing Ive found to work with this, mix batches according to steep requirement, then mix steeped batches for final flavor. Seems to make a dif at times.

Uhmm, maybe put the labels on after the bath? Otherwise isnt that sorta like taking a bath in your underwear(outside it probably doesnt peel off)?

Steeping is basically just the act of "aging," capped, in a cupboard or on a shelf away from light and at room temperature.

Airing is leaving set overnight (12-24 hours, usually) with the caps and drippers off and is best used on liquids that use alcohol when they are mixed, or have a strong chemical aroma to them.

Shaking is the act of shaking your bottle of elquid when you A) receive them, and B) before you fill your clearomizer/atomizer/juice delivery device, and can be combined with both steeping and airing.

Also, keep in mind that your tastebuds will still be quite dead for a few weeks after putting the last cigarette down and will recover over time. What might taste off now, might be good a few months down the road, either through steeping (aging) or from enlivened taste buds :)

A little follow up with my very strange flavor perception here. I open cap steeped (them just for 24 hours) two flavors that were difficult for me. Those being Pineapple and Banana. Singe flavor 15 mL plastic bottles.

I tried the pineapple today which is noted in the DIY sub forum as being a flavor that is a dominant flavor when mixed. After only a 24 hour period it was incredible that I'd say 80 to 85% of the foul tasting note was gone. Then I built up another Igo-W but this time I used organic cotton instead of the silica wick. On the cotton wick there was just barely a hint of the burnt taste 'thumbsup' I can't say just yet what another day steep will do. I'll know tomorrow though.

The pineapple came thru but it wasn't a sweet pineapple as I expected though, still I'm happy with the direction it's going but for now all bottles will get 24 hours opened and then tossed in a drawer for at least a week 'or more'. Thanks for all your responses. Maybe you could now give one of your coffee blends another try.

I consistantly vape Mount Baker Vapor's Guava, but I bought some bananna flavoring. On a mech mod, I try to keep my ohms at .8 to 1.0 ohms. I have two Vamos that I keep at 10-11 watts using a 1.4-1.8 ohm coil. Neither of these setups give any sort of burned taste. They are also not cloud chasing builds. I use organic cotton in one kayfun, Peaches and cream cotton yarn in the other kayfun, and silica in my AGA T-2. the peaches and cream cotton yarn is new to me, and only used it for this first build, but so far, so good. Organic cotton can be used for a few tank fulls. None o the taste you've been describing.

Now, what brand of juice are you using? The guava and Banana are clear from MBV, and they vape clean too. I went for one month on guava with no wick discolorization (silica). so, I know the flavor doesn't gunk up coils. You might want to try a different vendor.

For sweeteners, I try to avoid them. Sugar will caramalize, and flavors that are fruity shouldn't need any additional sweetners. Sweeteners usually gunk up the coils fairly quick.

For steeping. I leave the cap off for 2 days for fruit flavors, then start vaping. That gets rid of most "perfume" tastes. I I then usually shake it up, and let it to continue to steep with the cover on. most fruit flavors only need 2 open, 1 closed steeping time before they're vapeable. by a week, it should be as described. For the banana flavoring, I can turn 50ml of guava juice to a bananna with some slight guava aftertaste by using only 12 drops. The banana is definitely a dominant flavoring.

Drop the bottles into a sandwich bag
Seal it all the way across the top, leaving just enough room to stick a straw in
Use the straw to suck all the air out that you can.
Make sure it's sealed and throw it into the ultrasonic cleaner.

Any suggestions for steeping non-fruit flavored juices? Like tobacco and coffee?

Tobacco's take at least 4 weeks to mature .. shake them each day, and keep them in the dark.
Coffee's usually don't require much steeping time .. it depends on if it's solo or in a 4 or 5 flavor mix.
A "mix" needs time to merge the flavors...then again depending on what they are.
With tobacco, a month ..with creams, a couple of days to a week.

Like others have said, tobacco requires a long steep time. I haven't vaped tobacco flavors in a while, but when I did, here was my process:

When I received it in the mail, I would open it up and fill up a clean CE6. I'd vape it and pay attention to how it tasted. If it tasted perfumy, I would take the cap and nozzle off the bottle and let it air out. I would do the same thing with the CE6 cartridge... I'd take the top mouthpiece off and let it air out. once per day I would shake them up a bit. Occasionally, I would put the cap back on the CE6, shake it up, then vape it for a minute or two to check to see how far the airing process was going. sometimes this would take as long as a week, but eventually the perfume smell would go away. I would then check for how strong the flavor is. For that, I'd let it steep I'd put the mouthpiece back on the CE6, and put the cap and nozzle back on, shake it up and would let it sit for another week. For the CE6, I would put the little rubber protector on the top to seal it off. about once a week I would check the flavor to see if it's strong enough and the right taste. If after it's been airing/steeping for over a month, I figured that would be it's final flavor. Some liquids actually change longer than a month, so even if it tasted bad, I'd just throw it in the box, recoil thee CE6 for another juice, and forget about it for a while.

Last batch of CE6's were these:$1.87 CE6 Electronic Cigarette Flat Mouth Atomizer (1.6mL) - translucent / 3.0
Here's a video on how I rewicked them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7pNXSgDeis
I use 32 gauge kanthal, and I get it from here: lightningvapes | eBay
I do test my coils on my vamo to see what the resistance is first. I liked around a 2.0 ohm coil.

But that's just my method. Even though I don't vape using those CE6's, they're still good for steeping unknown liquids.. so I have a few still laying around. I've moved on to kayfuns. for tank cracking juices, I would setup a dripper and drip it from time to time.

Thanks Slots! I pulled a Rube Goldberg using duct tape and cut out paper squares to keep the tape from adhering to the labels. The baggie approach is much more efficient.

I just got in some tobacco's from vermillion rivers that had a born on date of 01/15/2014 since I've just come from mb lites. I've read several posts were new vapers try to source a juice similar to their analog brand. I'll be sure to open cap steep them for best possible results.

Thank you Neal that was a condensed and directed amount of information on your practical experiences most valuable to beginning vapers like me. Thanks for sharing your insights.

You are correct on the MBV juice source. They were just so dang inexpensive and great to deal with from the get go. I first ordered my kit and it came with a free vial of Thug Juice and it was great but not a traditional menthol fan, I went back for more. In the meanwhile I ordered some AVE Boba's Bounty and vaped that all day everyday. I was like Thomas the Tank with that stuff! Love It.

When the second MBV pkg arrived I randomly picked Ocean Breeze and that's where my problem started with the fruits. Man that stuff was ruff! But I rushed to vape it forgetting to steep it fresh from the mail.

Then while overlooking the process of steeping, I ordered a few high end liquids from companies whose only product is liquids and of course the problem continued since I didn't steep them either.

To make the story shorter, this was a hard lesson learned and THANKS a bunch to all your all excellent troubleshooters even via the web. (especially via the web.)
