I would start at 18mg. Then judge whether that is too much or too little and move up or down to 24mg or 12mg. The bioavailability of nicotine in vapor is a lot different than in smoke. Many notice they are chain vaping when they first start because they're not getting as much nicotine as they're used to. As everything in life, it evens out and you will be the best judge of what works for you.

I used to smoke 2 packs a day light cigarettes, when I switched to vaping tried 24mg nicotine level but it was too much, so immediately switched to 18mg and been vaping 18mg for at least 4 to 6 months which is enough, my thinking would be 18mg might work for you but I would not recommend buying a bunch of liquids, it would be a good idea to get 1-2 bottles to see if it is the right amount of nicotine.

how do you know that your not putting more nicotine into your body then when you were actually smoking?

You do not know about amount of nicotine. Depending of their preferences vapers may go both ways. But in the beginning it does not matter. First thing first: quit smoking; if you need to vape for quitting cigarettes – vape! Nicotine itself is not really damaging to health (in some cases even beneficial), its cigarette smoke that makes main damage. Nicotine addictive. If you want to get rid of not only smoking, but nicotine addiction as well, first quit smoking – nicotine in conjunction with smoke is more addictive than in vape form. When you are safely out of cigarettes and vaiping, you may want to decrease nicotine level in your juice or/and decrease amount of juice vaped. It will help in getting rid of nicotine if you will stay away from too effective vapor tools like RDA and RBA and try to avoid chain vaping.

And I agree that juice strength 18 mg is a good starting point.

I started at 12 and I'm still at 12 mg/ml--5 years later. :D

It's a good idea to have e-liquids in various strengths at the beginning--your body will tell you how much is too much. If you have a bottle of 12mg/ml and one of 24 mg/ml, you can mix those two eliquids together as needed (same flavor, of course).

Or get a bottle of 36 mg/ml unflavored base so you can add a few drops to your regular 12 mg eliquid to make it stronger.

You'll figure it out in no time. And keep it low(ish) if you like to chain vape.

I started at 18mg. And it burned my throat. I got a 12mg and found it much more enjoyable. Now I have several bottles of different flavors ranging from 6mg-18mg. 6mg for chain vaping, 12mg for my all day flavor, and 18mg for when I get a craving for a good throat hit. I have been off cigs for a month and a half and when times get stressful I still get a craving for a smoke like feeling, which I have found 18mg cures my craving. Then I switch back to my 12mg and vape all day. :D
