Firing problems

I have a mechanical mod where the sides screw on and off to make it the right size for a battery, and I have two 18650 batteries, both of which are very cheap. They're two different MAHs, the 2200mah battery works fine, but my 1500mah battery automatically fires when I put it in. They are both the same size, but the 1500 has a completely flat positive side, and the 2200 has a dented in positive side (it doesn't have a nipple). Do you think this could be the problem, or is it something else?

ok... you mentioned two things you never want to hear about a battery.
Cheap and Dent.

You are getting a dead short from the battery and it will go into thermal runaway if you try to use it. Properly recycle it and get yourself some approved / recommended IMR batteries.

Next things you don't want to hear of a battery doing.

Hot, Smoking, Oozing and Expanding... that's followed by going boom!

What brand/chemistry are these "cheap" batteries? Have you hit them on a DMM to test what they are coming off of your charger at? What charger are you using? Poor quality chargers also cause a slew of battery problems...

Most likely

This with an added "from a reputable vendor like RTD since there are a lot of poor quality fakes on places like amazon and ebay" is the absolute best advice.

Please understand this is just the factual solution. Please let us know if we can help with any links, battery specs, etc to make it easier :)

If you are using a mech mod, please educate on battery safety and different types of batteries and styles.

IMR batteries is all anybody here will recommend for a reason, when they fail their failure is not at catastrophic as ICR batteries. Recommended are Sony VTC4, VTC5, eFest 35amp purples (20amp depending on coil), AW, MNKE, new LG battery.

You also then have flat top or button top batteries, know the difference. Dented top is not an option to consider it safe to use.

If your battery is none of the above. please verify what batteries you have. If you don't know, that's a bad sign.

I never heard of a mech mod coming with a "great" IMR battery unless it was a kit somebody put together to sell.

Now that we covered basic battery safety. It's probably a matter of adjusting the mod to properly make contact.

The 2200mah (the one that's working) is a "Totally Wicked" battery, and I have no clue what the 1500mah battery is, but I'll ask my uncle ASAP.

Without knowing anymore, I would not use the 1500mah. I don't know of any IMR 1500mah 18650 batteries. The Totally wicked is a Protected ICR batteries. Not the most horrible thing in the world, but by todays choices in batteries (in my opinion) I would not use it. There are better options and it sounds like you have already decided on a good option in Sony VTC batteries.

For your safety I try to wait till they arrived. Just my friendly advice.

Why the other battery won't fire... adjustments of the mod or it's completely dead. Have you checked it with a meter?

That means that something is not adjusted right or you have a dead short.

Remember, any time you do something with a mech or rebuildables, or something is not behaving properly and you can't troubleshot it... always ask yourself. "Even though I don't know what I am using and unsure if it's safe... my face or hand is worth.............?"

Fill in the blank.

Personally my face is worth more then a pair of Sony VTC's that I can buy for $19 - $20 from a reputable supplier.
