Hi Everyone!

I thought I would post my thoughts as a day 1 e-smoker. I have been a Camel Lights pack a day smoker for about 15 years. Last week I was realizing that my lungs were feeling pretty ragged with smoking and the cedar pollen that is such a problem in Austin this time of year.

I've cut back but never quit smoking with the gum and patch. I was thinking about getting more gum but it just seemed futile and expensive. It dawned on me "man isn't there some kind of nicotine vaporizer out there?" A little Googlin and here I am!

So after several hours of research on this forum I decided to order a DSE 901b and a pack of 16 mg Camel cartridges from LiteCig. 4 days later I'm good to go which I do appreciate as a customer.

Now I have no idea which version of the 901 this one is - research around here for discussions on that. So anyway I tried it right out of the box and it did give a nice vapor for a few puffs. I pulled the cartridge out and realiized it's just an empty blank so I must have been smoking the primer? It felt like it had nicotine to me though.

I then loaded one of the cartridges that came with the unit. It smoked (vaped, that is) well for several puffs and then dropped off sharply after that. I let it rest a bit and tried again which helped some but then the latent charge that was on the battery straight out of the box ran down. I had already put the other battery on to charge and was surprised that the charger was showing green for a full charge so I switched out and that one has been going strong for a few hours now.

My first impression was surprisingly good. I could definitely feel the familiar nicotine calming as I had not smoked the whole day until then. The flavor is interesting. A hint of sweetness, but not so much as to be cloying. Fresh is the way I'd describe it mostly.

A couple of things were causing me concern though. Like I said the new cartridge would smoke well for a few puffs and then stop. Also there was alot of wet gurgling going on in there. I tapped it out on a towel once, took the battery off and blew through the hole to force the stuff back into the cartridge the next time. That seemed to work OK, but still the cartridge wasn't delivering vapor very long. I started rotating two cartridges to see if that would help but it wasn't very satisfying fiddling around so much and feeling a nic fit coming on since there was hardly any vapor.

Then I decided to try one of the 16 mg Camel cartridges. They were sealed in better plastic and I could tell right away looking at them that they were much more moist. Loaded it up and AHHH yes there we go- a hit that felt like the nicotine from a cigarette. I taste no resemblance to Camels, but the flavor is again pleasant. An interesting detail to note here is that the hole on the mouth piece of these cartridges is a slit as opposed to the round hole on the ones that came with the pipe. I read something here about that and how it makes a difference from one 901 type to the next. They definitely seem to work better to me.

The same gurgling issue was still happening with these cartridges too, but I discovered that if I simply pull the cartridge off and hit the ecig without it that I would get a good vapor for a few puffs until it evaporated. It's a little fiddly but OK.

Another issue I have noticed is that if I take a good long puff sometimes the auto switch doesn't kick off the current to the atomizer. Blowing back into the ecig stops that, but clearly that will have to be watched. I understand that the LED on the end has more than cosmetic value from that.

It's very clear to me why most here seem to favor using a liquid as it seems cartridges only work well when at an optimum moisture level. I would suggest if you are considering buying one of these ecigs to go ahead and order some liquid at the same time. I am ordering some tonight and hope my cartridges hold up until it gets here.

I am surprised how small the DSE 901b is. I can see how that can be convenient, but I am already considering getting something larger. I like the idea of the larger standard batteries that the e-cigars use and also the increased cartridge capacity. Since I do believe this is a very good alternative to me than smoking cigarettes that I intend to try and make work, it's important to me to get a set up that limits fiddling around too much with batteries and refills.

All in all I am extremely happy to have found this! The taste is quite acceptable to me- not tobacco like, but a calming and satisfying "smoke" nonetheless.
