It's actually a little quicker for me to weld it up and grind it smooth as apposed to drilling and tapping the holes. tapping aluminum with a tap that small is a little difficult. :-/ I do agree though, It does add more of a "ruggedness factor"

Too bad there is not a way you could just tack steel nuts into the corners of the tube. Wonder if someone makes a long aluminum nut or threaded aluminum rod...

Solid brass would make quite heavy, I am going to experiment with plating them in thin brass though and giving people options.
