Hello ECF, I am new to the forum but am in need of some assistance. I've been vaping now for about 3 years now and building coils for 2 years. Early on in 2017 I grabbed a velocity rda clone to replace my authentic velocity I had recently lost, and seeing as I am a cheap ... I opted for an unauthentic version. The RDA has been working great gor almost a year now, running on a cuboid 150 watt, but yesterday I threw a new build in, dual 7 wrap 24 guage kanthal 3mm inner diameter. The build was working as usual for the majority of the day, until I put it down for about an hour. When I picked up my device to take a drag an hour after putting it down the coil was totally unresponsive and reading an atomizer short. I was pretty ......, but in need of some nicotine I quickly threw it a new build of the same specifications. The new build initially read .5 ohms deadnuts but when I pressed the button to pulse it, it read an atomizer short the instant I pressed it, before a single ampere could even pass through it! I threw a single coil of the same specs, 7 wraps of 24 guage kanthal with a 3mm inner diameter, and it has fared better, but the resistance will change by roughly .05 ohms(according to my mod's resistance reader) every time I put it down for any length of time. I have a goon RDA I've since run on the cuboid to narrow down the issue, abd it does indeed seem to be the velocity clone. So what gives?! Anyone ever run across an issue like this before with an RDA? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Happened to me in two cases:

1) Mod chip was hoopajooped

2) Atomizer screws weren't screwed all the way down and/or my coils were making contact with the top cap when closed. It's especially noticeable when both of these things happen.

I wouldn't worry about a 0.05 ohm change, that could be a rounding error. The TCR value of Kanthal is 0.00002, so I doubt it's changing resistance because of the wire heating, like we would see with SS.

Sounds like you troubleshooted it being the RDA. Work your way from 510 connector to drip tip, making sure everything is in place. Sometimes the deck can get loose, or the 510 pin needs to be screwed in tighter. Could be wonky screws, slightly long/bent leads, or crooked posts. I've had a clone with a really shotty insulator too, causing shorting in a non visible area (under the deck).

Thanks all, I really appreciate the advice, eapecially since all reported instances of this issue on other forums that I've run across were about resistance changing during firing. I'll give @dom qp's suggestion a try before I retire the rda as suggested by @uthinkofsomething. Again, thank you guys!! Happy vapesgivving!

You could fire the RDA without a coil in it, if it still says "atomizer short" (as opposed to "no atomizer"), you'll know its the insulator or 510 pin.

Without a multi-meter to track down an issue ^^^this^^^ is the best way to check for an issue in the atomizer or mod's 510 connection.

Okay, I'm pretty steamed. Heeded to the advice of @dom qp and @opticrubi but to no avail. So I threw my goon on the cuboid, only to find the same issue persisting with a different rda now. I even busted out a doge I never use to find the same result. I feel like the answer is pretty clear. My box must be hoopajooped. Time to run to the store... =( Thanks again everyone!

Try cleaning the 510 on mod with a little rubbing alcohol or some such on a q_tip. If it's a spring loaded pin push it up and down and make sure it moves freely and does not get angled.
