Can't find a specific answer to my problem. Bought my first mechanical mod a month ago with an rba and loved it. I lost the firing pin so I bought myself a Stingray clone. I also attempted my first dozen coil builds. I purchased 30 AWG Kanthal A1 wire and 100ft of "Cloud Chasers" organic cotton wick. I am using a duel coil atty with 7 wraps on a 5/64 drill bit, getting ~ 1.0 ohms. They all burn....I can't get the burning taste out. I am using a AW 3.7V 18650 2000mAH battery. I went to my vapor shop and bought another rba that was already pre-built and got the same burning results. I went back and tried another...still same result. Now the cloud chaser wick is kinda thick so am I going to try and slim it down or make my coils slightly bigger...any help would be great.

It might be the cloud chasers cotton wick if it is what i think it is. I bought some a while ago off of amazon and could never get it to taste right on the protank rebuilds I was doing. I switched to organic cotton balls and then when I switched to mech mods and rda's kept with it. The cloud chasers seems to have a very low heat tolerance and always had either a cotton taste or burned taste. It might work better with slow heating coil and a high VG juice, but I never tried it. Cotton balls are cheap and you can grab them at any local pharmacy.

it's hard to diagnose a problem like that from just that information but, it sounds possible that you could be getting hot spots on your coil. make sure the wraps are as close together as possible and, before you put the wick through the coil, fire it a few times and make sure the coil is heating evenly from the inside out. if it isn't, heat up the coil then, after releasing the button (it's important that you don't do this while the mod is still firing because, if you do, it will cause a short circuit and ruin your coils and possibly damage your battery or rda), compress the coils together with some needle nosed pliers and repeat the process until they are glowing from the inside out. other than that, make sure you are getting sufficient airflow to the coils. if you are using a dripping atomizer, position the air holes directly in front of the coils. if you are using a tank, ignore this part of my comment. also, for a dripper, make sure the cotton is saturated with e-juice. redrip once the cotton starts getting dry.

Thanks for reply. I tried all of the things you mentioned although I'm sure my coils are still not perfect. I did not try the airflow holes facing the coils. I am using a dripping atomizer. I have a cheap 1.2ohm tank on it right now and it works perfect but liked the atomizer option due to cost. I probably spent $100 on kangertech wicks using their tank and got tired of it. Over half were duds every time. When using pliers to push coil together after heating...do I want them touching or not? I have seen both and heard different stories. Logic tells me if their touching, its like shorting it out and equivilent to a straight piece of wire running through.

I would also recommend using organic cotton (you can buy it super cheap at Walgreens) for your wick. make sure you don't use too much cotton as that will choke out the airflow but too little will cause your coil to get too hot and burn the cotton. youtube is actually a great resource for learning how to build coils and wick. watch some riptrippers coil builds

The coils can touch without a problem, when you heat the coils to glowing without the wick they will create a protective oxide layer that insulates the wire. You need to make sure they glow from the inside out to verify that the oxide layer has formed properly.

You might be using too much cotton. This has been said so often, but bears repeating since it is counter-intuitive. use WAY less cotton than you think you need. It will swell once you put juice on it. It should look like a gelatinous glob once soaked with liquid.

It could also be the juice. I have a couple of juices that really, really, really hate the heat and taste burnt unless the coil is flooded (at any wattage that produces vapor).
