Hey guys! I just did my first rda build. It's on a magma, single coil 30g with I think 5 wraps. I tested for ohms on my lava tube and it is 3.4, I'm vaping at 5.8v and it's not bad. When you thread the cotton are you supposed to twist it and fill the coil tight? I just threaded mine straight through and when it was wet there was a gap in the coil. Think I'm gonna vape it how it is tonight and try a rebuild tomorrow. Funny thing, I tested ohms at 3.4, took my first pull and there was a somewhat loud pop. I pictured the metal drip tip launching through the back of my head, lol funny way to die. Maybe the coil touched the cap and dropped the ohm? What size drill bit do you guys use for coiling?

On my Magma I use 3mm (using the Coiling Gizmo), two strands of 30ga wrapped 9 times as a single tight coil. Comes out to 1.7 ohms. I have a kick in my Nemesis, set to 12 watts. I wick with rayon. It is tight but I can still pull it without warping the coil.

The Magma is a great first RDA. [emoji41]

Something isnt right with your ohms, unless you were wrapping around something about 7mm around your ohms should be way lower. I use 30 ga wrapped around a 2mm screwdriver 6 times and Im usually around 1.5 ohms. I usually vape around 4 volts as well. You want your cotton wick to fill the coil without being too tight or too loose, just to the point where it wants to move the coil, cotton seems to swell when wet but I have no experience with it as I only use cellucotton rayon. I would double check that your lavatube is giving you a correct reading by also checking with a multimeter if you have one.

I can't figure out how to post pics on mobile or I'd show you, kind of looks like huge diameter compared to what I see on here. I've been vaping on it for about an hour and it's pretty good but should be better. I think what I need to do is get the coil tighter. A bigger diameter coil = more ohms right? I found a nail laying around that is like 1/2 diameter of the screwdriver I used for first coil. This is fun guys, thanks for the help! I'll let you know how it turns out.

As shatteredsoul76 mentioned, your resistance sounds a little high for the wraps.

    Now, your questions:

No, you don't want the wick twisted up packing the coil. Just twist up the end to make it easier to pull through. It's hard to explain precisely, but when you pull the cotton through, you want enough cotton to create a little drag when pulling it through. If it's hard to pull through or if you need to twist it tightly, it's too much cotton. If it slides through without any resistance, it's not enough. You will get the hang of it relatively quickly - cotton's cheap and easy to replace!

You don't want any gaps between the cotton and the coil because that creates localized hot spots.

That "pop" you heard is common. It's just the e-liquid vaporizing quickly.

Depending on what I am building, my coils are anywhere from just under 1mm to about 2.5mm.

Yes, a larger diameter coil with the same number of turns will have higher resistance. If by "get the coil tighter" you mean making the coils touch as they wrap around the screwdriver, yes, many vapers have found how good a micro coil can be, myself included.

    Practice makes perfect!

Just one of the many microcoil videos on YouTube, for your viewing pleasure:

Something is definitely wrong here. Using 30ga. Kanthal A1, it would take some 4.9 inches to yield a 3.4 ohm coil, if I am not mistaken.

Perhaps, it's late and I figured incorrectly.

Yeah, I got 4.7 inches, but regardless, that's a LOT of wire for a coil...

Might not be fastened down good enough. Seems like it would be around 1-1.5 ohms.

I use a 2 mm drill bit for the magma (well I use it for like everything) and use enough cotton that it resists going through the coil a little bit but not so much that it moves the coil when you try to pull it through. I wouldn't twist the cotton too much, only enough to get it started and then I cut the end off so it (hopefully) wicks better.

Ok I made a new coil. Tighter by half I'd say, 6 turns came out to 2.1ohm. I'm getting better flavor. I'm using mt vapor thug juice, with the 3.4 ohm got just grape, now I'm getting grape and menthol. Anyone know a vendor that sells grapefruit + mint juice? Thanks for the help!

Off the top of my head, no, but there are a few vendors that will let you customize an order - ECblend is one of them.

    Good luck!
