Hey guys! I just did my first rda build. It's on a magma, single coil 30g with I think 5 wraps. I tested for ohms on my lava tube and it is 3.4, I'm vaping at 5.8v and it's not bad. When you thread the cotton are you supposed to twist it and fill the coil tight? I just threaded mine straight through and when it was wet there was a gap in the coil. Think I'm gonna vape it how it is tonight and try a rebuild tomorrow. Funny thing, I tested ohms at 3.4, took my first pull and there was a somewhat loud pop. I pictured the metal drip tip launching through the back of my head, lol funny way to die. Maybe the coil touched the cap and dropped the ohm? What size drill bit do you guys use for coiling?
As shatteredsoul76 mentioned, your resistance sounds a little high for the wraps.
Now, your questions:
No, you don't want the wick twisted up packing the coil. Just twist up the end to make it easier to pull through. It's hard to explain precisely, but when you pull the cotton through, you want enough cotton to create a little drag when pulling it through. If it's hard to pull through or if you need to twist it tightly, it's too much cotton. If it slides through without any resistance, it's not enough. You will get the hang of it relatively quickly - cotton's cheap and easy to replace!
You don't want any gaps between the cotton and the coil because that creates localized hot spots.
That "pop" you heard is common. It's just the e-liquid vaporizing quickly.
Depending on what I am building, my coils are anywhere from just under 1mm to about 2.5mm.
I can't figure out how to post pics on mobile or I'd show you, kind of looks like huge diameter compared to what I see on here. I've been vaping on it for about an hour and it's pretty good but should be better. I think what I need to do is get the coil tighter. A bigger diameter coil = more ohms right? I found a nail laying around that is like 1/2 diameter of the screwdriver I used for first coil. This is fun guys, thanks for the help! I'll let you know how it turns out.
Yes, a larger diameter coil with the same number of turns will have higher resistance. If by "get the coil tighter" you mean making the coils touch as they wrap around the screwdriver, yes, many vapers have found how good a micro coil can be, myself included.
Practice makes perfect!
