Hey guys of course I'm new to this. Well with rda that is. I got my first rda which is the cats by rjmod and I'm having trouble building it. I have 28g kanthal using cotton and paper clip for micro coils. I have the wrapping down packed as well as setting everything up. But when I apply juice to saturate the cotton and I test fire it, certain parts of the coil will glow red which would give me a huge harsh hit. I tightened the coil as much as I can and it didn't work,I tried saturating the whole coil which worked a little but not fully. I tired repositioning the cotton all around the coil but that burnt it out. My first build, only the center of the coil lit red after applying cotton and juice. Then the 2nd time the neg and the pos were glowing red. The coil is touching nothing at all whenever I build. I try to hit it and I can only hit it at least 2 times before the hits are just way too harsh for me. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong please help.

Hey Misterpimp, your coils should not be glowing red at all when filled with soaked cotton. They should only glow red when you fire it up to check the coils are working before you add the cotton and juice.

Maybe some photos of your setup would help show what the problem is with your build.

I have not got a CATS RDA myself, but I have seen them and gather they are designed for quad coils.

What device are you using it on (mech mod or regulated)? How many coils & ohms?

Um..I don't have a picture I should've but I don't. I don't even have any more wire. Yeah the coils work, I usually wrap first, torch the wrap, tighten everything, put it in the rda and put in cotton and juice. I use the rjmod zodiac. I don't have an ohm reader yet but it's 28g and I do 6 wraps. I've only done a single coil so far. I'm not really ready enough for a double or more lol

Sorry I can't say exactly what your problem would be but you could try a different approach. I cut my wire, and run a lighter along it juuust until it turns red (makes it easier to work with) and then wrap it around my drill bit and put it into the RDA. Then I load up the cotton and go. I don't do any torching of the coil (I'm not positive but maybe that's the issue?). Hope this helps a little.

I didnt do it this time with the torch. I didnt do anything but just wrap it around a paper clip, place it in and then place in cotton/juice. its still doing it. I managed to find some left over kanthal. I have a video thats processing right now on Youtube and Ill add it on this post. now in response to PCUT. the highest I've gone is 6 wraps ive been doing less than that thinking thatll resolve my issue but as soon as i get more wire I'll have to try out like 8 wraps or something. but the video is on its way once its done processing.

First step.. Get an ohms reader. Your too low, you need either more wraps or a drill bit to wrap on.

Agree with this. If you're wrapping on a paperclip that's more like a nano coil. And only 6 wraps...could be dangerous if you don't have the proper battery.

That being said, if you do know your resistance and have the proper battery, try this: After you mount the coil in your RDA, and before you add your wick and juice, fire your mod in short bursts until the coil glows red. Then take your finger off the button and gently squeeze both ends of the coil together with needle-nose pliers or tweezers for about 10 seconds. Repeat this until the coil glows evenly from the middle outward. This will eliminate hot spots.

You're using a cats for your first RDA?? Oh dear. You should have started with a single coil RDA first or an RDA that can be built with a single or dual coil setup. As stated already, your ohms are too low. And what battery are you using? I hope its a high amp battery. You need to get a diffrent RDA for beginners and save that one for latter us. It can just sit on your bookcase and look purty for now, lol. And yes, You need some kind of ohm meter to do any kind of coil building. A paperclip? Oh dear times two.

Did you do any research before getting started with this? Sorry for sounding like i am being hard on you.. BUT IT"S FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY! not just the safety of your mod and RDA.

I'm using the Efest Purple 32amp 2500mah 18650. I cant even tell where it starts for getting hot when i fire it. it just all glows at the same exact time it doesnt start from the inside or the outside it just all goes off at once. but I have the video now to show you guys whats going on.

Please put youtube in front of the "link" below

Yeah i was thinking to get a start up rda but i realized with my personal life i wouldnt be able to really afford to keep buying a bunch of start up tools. so i just went all out and bought the cats because it was the one i really wanted and i couldnt find one that resembled it. i also watched videos for a long time on how to build. then after that i just got the paper clip and just started building. can i ask though why everyone is freaking out that im using a paper clip? Im not trying to be rude but im just trying to understand why everyone is judging me. I just wanted to try out nano coils. I started out just taking cotton and wrapping wire around it and that didnt really work out because i was getting next to nothing out of it. i watch rip trippers a lot and a few random videos on youtube and just decided to use a paperclip.

Because you are a new member and need more post's first. Just stop what you are doing and do some research on building coils first. Does anyone have any good links for OP to get started? I don't atm but could look around.

The questions you are asking me show you have no idea what you are doing. Basically, the smaller the hole is for the wick to go through, the more wraps you must do to get your ohms up. I never used a paperclip for my builds. You can get cheap RDA's for around $10 from fasttech. Any style clone you want. You can even get cheap single coil RDA's from US dealers for around the same price. And for the recorde, You can not do a single coil build on that RDA. It's not built for it. You will not get the propper airflow to get a good vape out of it. It is an advanced device meant for advanced users only. Did you read the disclaimer before even buying it in the discription? I know they had to have one. They almost always do for those type of devices. Hold on, Let me look it up again to be sure. It's been a while sence i looked at that RDA. It's is pretty. But you can't just be buying stuff like this because it looks good, lol. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

Nobody is judging you, I believe the consensus is that we're worried for your safety and don't want to see someone's face blown off on the evening news. Nano coils are considered fairly advanced as far as coil building goes, not just the coiling and mounting part but the knowledge that goes into how to actually run the setup. Look at it this way: If you had never picked up a hammer and nails before, would your first project be a two-story house? I think not. Safety first, that's all I'm saying.

Yup. You can not use this RDA with a single coil build unfortunately OP. RJ Mods CATS RDA | Vapor Mods

Forgive me for sounding like an A hole OP. I am trully trying to help. And btw, A quad coil will drain a battery very quickly because it is pulling more power than a single coil. The more coils you have, the more power it will drain from the battery. If you really want a good vapeing expereince, you need good airflow to your coil. It is the next most important thing to your battery.

lol first off i appreciate you being honest with me. im 20 lol 21 next month. been vaping for 2 years but just started rebuilding...ill try fasttech but the last time i bought from them my package was intercepted for some reason and took me 4 months before they gave up and just gave me a refund. i bought the cats from btvape. there was no disclaimer at all though..

Hi Mister... you have a couple problems as far as your description goes... you have too narrow a coil winding.... leading to a coil that is likely too low an ohm load.

When I build a coil i always wrap the coil then install it in my device(while still around the drill bit)..... remove the bit and test for target ohm load.. test fire until whole coil glows then use a tweezers to clamp the coil and cool in place repeat this process to form one solid coil. This will ensure that you have a robust coil that heats from the center out....

Kmart sells a plenty useful craftsman meter for $22.... Sears also sells the same one.... get one before you build anything else. Please be safe. Know your ohm load.

Like i said, there are US dealers also. I suggest this site a lot because i order a lot from them and they have the best deals around i have found. Drippers & Rebuildables - E-Cig Parts They also sell cheap ohm meters. This is a must for building coils to test for shorts aslo.

I am not saying you have to order from them. I am just saying there are cheaper options in the US(I am guessing that's where you are from). And make sure the one you get can work with a single coil build. It's all about getting airflow concentrated directly onto your coil build for optimal cloud and flavor production. This also helps to cool the coil so that you don't get such a hot hit.

If you find an RDA you like, you can simply search how to build it up on youtube or whatever. As you obviously did not do that for the CATs.
