Hi all,

I'm trying to get into this DIY e-juice, I did my research and I'm hoping you experts can help to verify if I'm doing this properly.

To my understanding, it will be easier to use and measure 100mg/ml nicotine solution with either 100% PG or VG or 50/50 PG VG, in my case I'm thinking to use 100mg/ml 100% PG nic solution. Then I will need 100% PG and 100% VG, also some flavorings.

If I want my finished product to be 6mg nic and 50/50 PG/VG with 3% of flavoring in a 30ml bottle, i will need these to be mixed in...

(according to steam-engine e-liquid calculator)
1.8ml nic base
0.9ml flavoring
13.2ml PG
14.1ml VG

does it sound about right? if i find this recipe doesn't give enough flavor, i will need to add in more flavoring and less PG right?

Thanks.

Edit: I tried linking the calculator I use, apparently I cannot. Google search: ejuice calculator. It should be the second link.

That said, after plugging in your desired nicotine, pg/vg mix, and flavor concentration, my output is similar to yours. However, mine reads 15ml of vg.

Out of curiosity, is there any reason why you are only mixing 3% flavor? Chances are you won't taste much with such a low amount. If I may offer a suggestion, start with 10% and work your way up if that is not enough. I have found the magic number to be somewhere around 15% flavor. (ex: For vanilla custard I may mix 13% Vanilla Custard, and 2% Dulce De Leche, for a total of 15%).

In theory, you can add more flavor if your initial mix is not to your liking. Problem is, if you're mixing multiple flavors, it would be difficult to determine how much of each to add, post-mixing.

A lot more accurate than counting drops!

Incidentally, the method you use is sound, because what happens is you calculate the nic you need for the size of bottle you are making. Half that is always going to be VG. So you only ever have to play with the flavours as you like and top it up with PG.

It's simplicity itself and the method the wife uses to make her liquid.
Best wishes.

Here is one of the best calcs out there. You only need the one marked "setup_V5.0.0.7.zip" unzip it, install it, and open the help file for quick setup. Here is the dropbox link:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ceu7kr789fq5wdt/Lmw4X_Xg9j

That will get you hammering away! I'm not a big fan of the EZJuice calc that many others use - as the calcs occasionally crash.

I use 15ML pipettes (for bottle transfer), 10ml syringes and 1ml (10cc) syringes for all my mixing with no needle of any sort (blunt or sharp). Syringes are a great choice.

@GrandSam, I was only guessing the 3% but I will certainly follow your suggestion to start with 10% or more.

@supertrunker, besides using weighing scale, are 1ml syringes accurate enough?

Excellent choice. Syringes are not only adequate, but are actually recommended when measuring out juices, nic, etc.

Here is what I suggest you pick up (should be able to get all of these for under $10): 1ml syringe, 5ml syringe, a few needle tips, a couple pippetts, and a 20ml syringe if you intend on making bottles larger than 20ml (note: Since VG is so vicious, you can actually remove the plunger from a syringe, pour the VG in [while covering the tip of the syringe], insert the plunger, and "inject" the VG into your bottle [no needle tip]).

@GrandSam, where would be a good place to pick up all those items?

There are plenty of sites. I tend to use wizard labs most often (you can also get nic, pg and vg, flavors, etc). Some pharmacies will also sell them to you. I've never purchased from a pharmacy as I've been told that if you tell them you will be using them to mix e juice, they won't sell you the syringes.

Since your nic is mixed in PG and so typically are the flavours, then for a 50/50 PG/VG mix, 15ml has to be VG.

Other than that, it looks fine - my only misgiving would be how accurately you can measure 1.8ml. You might consider using weighing scales instead, such as ones used for jewellery.

T
could you use a 1 ml syringe similar to tuberculin or insulin syringes

I'm pretty much of a newbie too. I gave up on using syringes. These are what I use now (click to go to Amazon):

The little one can measure to an accuracy of about 0.2ml (Remember to measure the position of the bottom of the meniscus, not the top.)

It is difficult to get the various components to mix well. That's what at least the first part of steeping is all about. For small quantities you can mix them in the bottle you are going to keep them in. Then shake well, use a speed-steeping method of your choice and leave them for days.

This last time I mixed in this.

I put the top on, gave it a really good shake until it was cloudy with air bubbles and then put it in an ultrasonic bath for about 20 minutes. It came out as clear as water.

One trick I use, to make sure none of the components is still in the measuring cylinder and messing up the maths, when I'm finished I add 1ml of water to the little one, put my thumb over the top and shake. Then pour it into the next one (I only use 2) and repeat. Then pour it into the liquid. 1ml of water doesn't affect 30ml of liquid much and I like VG-heavy mixes so it helps with the viscosity.
