OK, up to now I have mixed my own using pre-made flavours to create new ones but now want flavours that I can't find pre-made so attempting to make my own from scratch.

While I'm fine with working out the solutions to get the required nic stregth what is baffling me is the flavour, having looked at a few calculators they all ask for flavour %, is this something I decide (in which case what is a medium flavour %) or a stregth dictated by the flavour I bought (perfumers apprentice flavours) and if so where do I find that information?

Sorry if this sounds a really dumb question.

Also I have a couple of juices that taste a little synthetic and was planning on adding say chocolate to them to make them (hopefully) usable, I'm guessing something like 5 drops per 10ml would be about right (I don't mind lowering nic stregth on these but don't want to waste them)

They all say to start at 10% and work up from there, I use Perfumers Apprentice and have for the right spot for me to be 20%. On the PA site it will say if the flavor is strong, then start at 10%. Adding flavoring to unvapeable fluid is the best way not to throw away money. Start at 6 drops and work up from there, it's personal taste so what might be weak to you might be strong to me

Some flavorings should be started even lower then 10%. Some start at 1%, some at 5%. Start low and add more as needed. It's easier to add then to take out (reduce). ;-)

It's all a matter of taste AND a matter of the individual flavor(s) being used. JMO.

Most flavor descriptions, if not all, at Perfumers Apprentice has the recommended starting strength.
There are some posts around the DIY area that lists flavor reviews and what strengths used, etc.
I don't have time this morning to locate them to re-post here for you, but do some poking around. Lots of useful info here for the taking.

Chocolate, vanilla, caramel or a bit of Ethyl Maltol tend to be good for trying to salvage skunky liquids.

10% is a good starting point for general flavors. If working with tobacco flavors however, the initial % of flavoring can be as low as 2-3%. Tobacco Absolute can even be less than that. Additional flavors can be added to the tobacco that would get you up to the 10% initial level.
