Finding the right balance is the key. In my (limited) experience, it can be a very fine line between leaking all over the place and not wicking enough to keep the atty wet. Change liquids and you have to start all over. But with practice you will get it right from the start, and when you don't you will at least know what to do to fix it. There is allot of great info in here to help. Keep trying, you'll get it.

Fluval does make and sell different materials. The stuff that looks like cotton works for some things and the stuff that looks like blue sponge is good for some things. There is all kinds of help in this forum and on utube. Also try looking up zero fill mod, blue foam dart, and pyramid tea bags just to get started. It seems to me that they all work only marginally well for all but a few. I think the key is to work with what you have until you find what works for you. Then you can post your ideas and confuse the rest of us even more.

btw I had the most luck with the ZFM but it is kind of touchy to adjust for each liquid. Works well when you get the hang of it though.

You didn't get the wrong stuff, it's preference and what works for you best that matters. Some prefer the foam and some prefer the batting type fluval. I've tried both, they both work but in my experience the foam takes a little longer to get exactly right with cutting it to size to get optimal results for the fluid to flow. Once you've figured that part out through a little trial and error both work great.

I've been using the Blue Foam for months now and it's fantastic. Also sometimes use the Fluval and that is also foam and fantastic.

I have tried the polyfil from Walmart and the blue foam rite size U by marineland. Definitely, I like the blue foam better.

Once you get some, cut a fair size square of it and wash it by hand with some liquid dish soap. Rinse it out very well and let it dry. That will get rid of any off odors and make it more receptive to absorbing the nic juice.

Cut a small piece about 5/16ths to 3/8ths wide and about 3/4th of an inch long. Use a pair of tweezers and insert it longways into the cart. Pull it back out a bit so that you can trim it off even with the cart opening. Push it back in the cart. It should be just about 1/8th inch below the top of the cart without compressing it.

I replace the foam about every two weeks, but it will probably last a lot longer than that.
