Because the units are similar...
Mentaly, it is harder for people to add up dis-similar numbers. They have to keep a running total for each addition.
So in this problem, your mind sees that it is easier to add up all the 1,000's and then add the rest. Adding all the 1,000's gives you 4,000.
But when you go to add up the smaller numbers, you mind is still holding the 4,000 in memory and the units were in 1,000's
So when a total of the small numbers is reached, a 1 with some zeros next to it, you can easily make the mistake of say it 1,000 instead of 100.
Most people do not do well adding numbers in their head if the amount of digets in each each number are different.
That or it is Very Hot outside and they have been drinking beer with Watermelon flavoring in it.
