"flameguard" is pretty common in a lot of carto's, from what i understand it's just a method that keeps the filler material away from the heating elements.

this reduces the chances that the material will accidentally alight when they are dried out and the battery is fired. something that to date has never been reported as happening.

a "dry burn" may still give you a slight burning smell, but the worst that will really happen is the carto will go bad before it catches on fire. and as long as there is juice in the carto, it's not a worry.
