in the past 2 months i have gained 10+ lbs. i quit smoking mid feb when i started vaping. i know when some ppl (seems mostly women) quit smoking they gain some weight. i hadnt read any info on this but had always attributed it to the lack of stimulant the cigarettes contained. i have weighed between 155-160 for several yrs. i take daily meds that as a side effect keep me from being hungry therefore i cant eat much at one time. this is why when i went on disability and stopped pretty much any exercise, i didnt gain any weight.

my hubby has had a hard time switching from smoking to vaping. he says theres something missing in vaping that keeps him from quitting smoking. it would make sense on both accounts if the stimulant is what is missing between vaping and smoking.

does anyone know (not quess) if the nic liquid still contains the stimulant that is in a cigarette or if something is lost in the extraction process. i guess it may be something in the additives of a cigarette that is different. i do know this isnt a normal weight gain for me. i havent changed my eating habits meaning i dont eat more or different types of food since i started vaping. im drinking the same amount of water as i did before. i take a diuretic for my blood pressure so i know its not water weight.

Nicotine is typically an appetite suppressant i thought and switching to vaping wouldnt cause weight gain(i didnt gain any weight). Interested to see some input here as im obviously off.

As far as your husband goes, there are like 4000+ other chemicals in cigarettes, many of them also are addictive, he is probably just missing them. Id note that the nicotine is the big one, and it only takes a little will power to make the switch usually

I can't speak for a scientific method but vaping kills my appetite like smoking and relieves the feeling of being stuffed after a big meal as well. For my first few weeks I noticed myself eating more but I think it was subconscious suggestion... Think teenagers drinking near-beer, they will behave as if it's real beer until they know it isn't. Eventually, I gave up on the notion that my appetite would increase but that doesn't mean it hasn't or doesn't.

A lot of people snack while they're trying to quit because of the hand-to-mouth thing. Don't know what to do with yourself. I know I snacked a little, but having sweet juices helped curb that a little. If you gained a bit when you don't have much of an appetite to begin with, then maybe there is more to it than just snacking, though. I know cigarettes have a small dose of MAOIs that vaping lacks but I'm not familiar with it's other side effects besides being mildly anti-depressant.

your husband may want to look into WTA "whole tobacco alkaloid" juices or supplementing with snus.

Anyone stop to consider that MAYBE youre gaining weight because youre becoming more healthy?

Ive put on 20 lbs in 6 months...some of its inactivity as Im not waiting tables anymore and am focusing on school.

Id say the other half is because Im finally free from a chronic disease and healthier than Ive ever been in my life.

Food for thought at least.

I second this motion. I did gain a bit, about 15 lbs, but as I was able to increase physical activities (disc golf for me) I lost it with no issues.

Bump up the nicotene level slightly. My BP has dropped dramatically since quitting cigs 9 months ago. My weight has remained the same......

I find nicotene supresses my appetite somewhat. Your energy levels should have increased after quitting cigarettes.

This is one of the first things I thought of. We are doing a lot of harm to ourselves with smoking on a daily basis. Our bodies will continue to try and repair that harm as long as we are doing it. That has got to take up some of our daily calorie intake. Perhaps extra pounds are actually closer to your healthy weight.

I am not a doctor and I might be well off the mark, but it sounds reasonable to me.

So far, I am losing weight, but haven't been vaping too long yet. I'm a little over a month and am just now starting to get my appetite back after discovering that I was "forgetting" to eat when I was vaping. I do know that I was beginning to see signs of insulin resistance from smoking, which would lead to weight gain so I'm hoping that maybe now that I haven't been smoking that my insulin response will be closer to normal and I will continue to lose.

I haven't heard it mentioned yet, but I know that people gain weight after quitting even if they are on a strict diet...there are some interesting studies that relate to cigarette smoking and insulin responses:

Consequences of smoking for body weight, body fat distribution, and insulin resistance

In the short term, nicotine increases energy expenditure and could reduce appetite, which may explain why smokers tend to have lower body weight than do nonsmokers and why smoking cessation is frequently followed by weight gain. In contrast, heavy smokers tend to have greater body weight than do light smokers or nonsmokers, which likely reflects a clustering of risky behaviors (eg, low degree of physical activity, poor diet, and smoking) that is conducive to weight gain.

http://brainposts.blogspot.com/2012/10/weight-gain-after-smoking-cessation.html

The meta-analysis estimated the average weight gain in the year after smoking cessation was a little more than ten pounds. Most of the weight gain occurs within six months of smoking cessation with approximately half occuring in the first two months.

Weight gain is not inevitable with smoking cessation. In the meta-analysis approximately 20% of the quitters lost weight after 12 months. On the flip side, approximately 15% of the quitters gained over 20 pounds by the end of one year.

Pre-smoking cessation weight gain concern did not appear to reduce the amount of weight gain. Those most concerned about weight gain, had less weight gain at one and two months but still gained about the same amount of weight by one year.

Unfortunately, the review did not find any support for pharmacotherapy to reduce the amount or pattern of weight gain. Bupropion, nicotine replacement and varenicline treatment groups all gained about the same amount of weight as those not treated with pharmacotherapy.

I have a lousy slow metabolism and I love being skinny. It's always been an effort even when I'm exercising heavily. I gained weight FAST in previous efforts to quit smoking. A serious PIA.
I didn't gain a pound after switching to vaping and now weigh less than when I started, even though two of those three years had me tied to a very sedentary job with little time to work out.
Lovin' that.

Nicotine's the stimulant.

I quit once cold turkey for a year, and did not gain weight. been cig free for over a month and just vaping recently, and have been losing weight. the first time i quit , without vaping, i made sure i ate properly and went for walk with all that nervous energy, drank lots of water, and didnt gain. same thing this time, but i think im losing weight because i had not been feeling that great the last year of smoking and not eating that great and since i quit i have changed to a more healthier lifestyle again and have been feeling alot better.

Yes, there is most definitely something missing from vaping, and what your husband is feeling is not uncommon.

Check out this link for the full story...
Feels like something is missing? Whole Tobacco Alkaloids

sorry.... i had intended to include the suggestions that ive gotten to get WTA for him. i will do that. does anyone know if the WTA will cover the possible lack or reduction of a stimulant?
