Most likely based on someones preferred opinions. There is no standard I bet 5 people building the same atty will do it 5 diff ways. After a couple wicks you start to learn quickly what will work for your style of setup, and power.

I dont even measure anymore just take the scissors and say yep about there should work, and it does.

But I got a ruler out so I would guess 35 to 45 mm wide depending on the hole, besr part is you can always cut more off or roll it smaller to make it fit the hole.

An ordinary lighter may soot up your wick quite a bit. I soak my wicks in e-liquids and set it on fire. After rolling it. Won't burn very hot and gives a more even result than directly scorching it. It's mainly to burn off any residual machine oils.

A jet/storm lighter burns much cleaner and won't leave much soot. Still, I don't see the need to heat treat the wick a lot.
