I had to look that up, AE.
<< Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value.

Currently over 823,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.>>

When I was a kid we did orienteering and scavenger hunts, but I guess it's all more scientific now with GPS.

To be honest I can vape and run, but then I could smoke and run too.

Happy hunting!

:)

It's pretty much like a high tech treasure hunt. I've been caching for... well.... lemme go check my profile on that site. Been caching since early 2004.

Anyone interested in starting to cache, I'd suggest you go over to the forums at geocaching.com and see if anyone is selling an old GPS so you don't spend loads of money. Many times when the newest thing comes out, people will buy it and have an old one or two GPS's they don't need. Or you can go to Bass Pro shop. They have a very nice GPS for $100. Forget the name... it's not a Garmin or a Magellin. But I read the booklet for it and it does everything I need my Garmin 76csx to do, but loads cheaper. Wish that was out when I bought my 76 and I'd have saved several hundreds of dollars.

I guess an Android phone would do to get your feet wet if you had an extra battery just in case you let the GPS run the first one dry. The Androsensor program and others like it show GPS info, altitude, and a host of other interesting and useful numbers. Whether they would get you 3 feet or 300 feet from the prize is another question.

I've used my blackberry several times and that thing is horribly inaccurate.. I used it to hide one cache and nobody could find it. I went out with my Garmin Colorado and standing on the cache it said I was 48 feet away. If your just getting into the sport a phone gps would work, but issues with accuracy might deter some folk.

My Blackberry used to tell me the accuracy within x number of feet. I'm sure my Garmin would get me closer once it linked to more satellites. I don't know how many satellites a smartphone can deal with at once. I think 3 are the minimum to determine a location and the more the merrier. 4 reduces the chance that there could be an error in calculation.

Im sure there were many factors, lack of satellite connections, weather, and trees as well. The app on my blackberry is BlackStar and I dont think it tells me its accuracy. I wonder if different apps have different readings as well..
