I've been running mesh on the Iatty for some time. Lorderos has a tutorial here:

You route the mesh through the channels in the plastic the same way you route silica. You just need a couple of pieces of silica to isolate the mesh from the NR-wires (and maybe also to isolate from the cap). I have used that method, and also running the mesh in teflon tubing to prevent shorting.
Both work quite well, but i would rather do away with silica and teflon if possible.

I find that silica-wicks impart a taste to the liquid. Some wicks are worse than others, but the taste is always there. Imeo's new 3.5mm wick is propably the best so far, but i still prefer the non-taste of mesh.
Also, my mesh-wicks dont gunk up as quickly as my silica-wicks.
