Looks like I'm going to be giving up on e-cigarettes. The first reason is that I shorted out my battery by getting juice on it. The second reason is that it seems that the jury is out on the safety of wick materials. Silica is said to fragment and be inhaled, and cotton, even if organic, is bleached with hydrogen peroxide, which is an oxidizer, not something to be inhaled. I would assume that the amount of hydrogen peroxide in a cotton ball is minuscule, but unless the safety of wick materials can be verified 100%, it's just not a gamble I'm willing to take.

Granted for someone who is getting off of cigarettes the harm reduction would be immense, but since I don't smoke cigarettes and am not trying to get off smoking tobacco, there is no reason to risk using e-cigs, even though the risks are probably low. I'm sure other people have had the same thoughts on the subject.

Unfortunate because I enjoy the taste and vapor of e-cigs over the occasional cigarette I used to smoke everyone once in a while. Now I guess I'll quit cold turkey and not puff on anything. Oh well. Maybe if a verdict is reached on silica wicks or a safe wick material is introduced into the market I will look into it.

Edit: This thread might have been better placed in the health and safety sub-forum, I have no objection to it being moved.

Yeah..gottaa watch that hydrogen pyroxide and cotton. Much better to smoke treated leaves and paper that yield over 3,000 chemicals..a fair number of which are poisonous...and a good number of those, carcinogenic. Also, let us not forget the oxygen robbing Carbon Monoxide. Wait...the tar itself that builds up in your lungs...the stink...and the dulled sense of taste and smell...but if you dont have to do either? Then don't.

Just a note: Hydrogen peroxide is the only germicidal agent composed only of water and oxygen. Like ozone, it kills disease organisms by oxidation! Hydrogen peroxide is considered the worlds safest all natural effective sanitizer. It kills microorganisms by oxidizing them, which can be best described as a controlled burning process. When Hydrogen peroxide reacts with organic material it breaks down into water and oxygen.

Boiling cotton will get rid of hydrogen peroxide! However, its not harmful because it breaks down into water and oxygen. We breathe oxygen everyday and we are vaping water soluble ingredients anyway!

However... If you were not a smoker then quit. I happen to love vaping and will continue. I was a pack and a half a day smoker for over 20 years so I chose the safest route, vaping.

Was going to state the same, no idea why someone would pick up vaping when they weren't a smoker first but to each their own. I guess it is a "reduced harm alternative" and would be better for someone to pick up vaping rather than smoking, just not an expected path to me.

OP: I can't argue with your points especially if you were not vaping to avoid smoking, really do wish you the best of luck!

I occasionally rinse my mouth with hydrogen peroxide. It's used in lots of toothpastes as well.

I'm sure I've inhaled much more of it from doing that than from vaping.

But what's your point? Why did you post this? Are you hoping that others will quit vaping in droves because of your "insight"?

Or are you just trolling?

Exactly! But if you were vaping to quit cigs, why would you go back to smoking based on the reasons the OP has???

Sounds to me like someone just tired of the hassle of e-cigs, nevermind that it's so much safer than cigarettes -- people can rationalize anything to go back to doing what they really want to do.

As someone (Elizabath Baldwin? I think?) stated so correctly... boiling removes peroxide from cotton yarn, though peroxide isn't terribly harmful anyway, unless you drink it or something equally stupid. Some people use it to swish with, after brushing their teeth -- surely some of that has to be absorbed by the tissues of the mouth?

I certainly wouldn't! Lol. If you look at the ops post history, a large percentage is about wicking material. Seems to have been a concern since he started.

I started vaping after quitting smoking ten years ago. I did it for the nicotine.
