Wow, a lot of posts since I was here earlier today!
im curious, how do you catch plagiarism?
paste a couple lines into google?
Hey DocTonyNYC, I've been wondering about this too!
Tony should not give up his secrets how he knows someone is plagiarizing... he is obviously well read... I always loved my professors that busted the unoriginal plagiarists in a time not so long ago that copying and pasting to plagiarize.. was not a click or two.. Bravo for being a true teacher lol..
Thanks, Factor. . . I've been having a pretty rotten year as far as my career is concerned, and it feels great to get such a nice compliment.
I don't mind giving up my "secret." In fact, before my students even submit any work I tell them exactly what I will do to check. Apparently they either don't listen, or they don't believe me (either is a good possibility).
LD--that's pretty much what I do. I can usually tell when I read something if it is something a student wrote. Sometimes students plagiarize by using passages that are written far above their level--sometimes above the level of my own writing! I don't know who they think they are fooling (add to the fact that most of my students speak English as a second language--then it's even more obvious). But, yes, then I copy and paste into Google. If a student has plagiarized, I can generally find the source in a matter of seconds. There are, actually, several plagiarism detection programs. Apparently they are a little faster, and they can check a complete essay at a time. These are subscription based (and my institution is too cheap/poor to subscribe), but it's not worth it for me to pay for it.
But, yes, Factor I think you were right to like it when professors would catch it. When students get away with cheating it devalues the degrees that everyone else earns. I really have zero tolerance for it. Unfortunately, I know that some professors just look the other way because they don't think it's worth it. Personally, I think those professors are both lazy and irresponsible.
