One of the things that I did while I was in New York last week was that I decided to upgrade my iPhone. Just to be clear, I am not an Apple fanboy, but my iPhone is the only phone that I have ever really liked. Over the last few months, the battery life dropped (even with an external battery case!) to the point that I couldn't go anywhere without a charger. In addition, the touchscreen started to become non-responsive. I also decided to get a phone with more memory because I'm tired of constantly needing to delete things to make room.

Knowing that I was also planning to start dieting and exercising, I bought a device that connects to my phone through BlueTooth (talk about a battery sucker, by the way!). This device works like a high-tech pedometer--counting every step that I take. It also tracks my sleep--specifically, the number of hours that I'm asleep, the number of times that I get up, and my sleep stages. It's the sleep information that has been a real shock. I've known for a long time that I don't sleep very well--I wake up a lot. What I've found is that in the last week, I'm averaging about four hours of sleep on any given night. It's kind of scary, to be honest, but it's certainly been eye opening. I'm hoping that the diet and exercise (I'm planning to return to the gym tomorrow) will help; if it doesn't, I think I may need to find a doctor who specializes in sleep problems. (I've tried every OTC and prescription sleeping pill on the market--including the homeopathics. I could take an Ambien and then drive around town--it has little to no effect.)

I don't know why I'm mentioning all of this here except to say that the last several days have been a period of self-awareness for me.

5: Sleep is important, that is why your mentioning it.

LOL. You've got a point there, tigg.

For a long time I thought that my poor sleep was related to my 3-pack a day cigarette addiction. I used to wake up in the middle of the night, walk out to the living room, and chain smoke. Regularly, I would fall asleep and drop burning cigarettes--burning holes in area rug (intentionally a very cheap one for that reason), or burning myself. Now I find myself rarely vaping a night, but I still wake up. . . so it's clearly not the nicotine.

Finally home from work today, it was a long one. Doc that sounds like a neat app, I would be very curious as to how much I sleep every nite, I would bet its about the same as you or maybe even less.

I really have been shocked by the results. I really thought that I was sleeping much longer.

4. interesting issue Doc, I wonder why? I have a very different sleep problem, it takes forever to convince myself to get in bed, then forever to fall asleep, but I never want to get up in the morning.

I have serious problems waking up most mornings. I often sit on the couch and doze off while sitting up for several hours. To be honest, I also have a hard time getting myself to go to bed. I stay up much too late (I also eat too late, but that's another story). I'm trying to force myself to start going to bed a bit earlier.

2. Doc what app is it?
I'd love to hook it up to DH since he quit using his cpap.

The one I got is called UP and it's made by Jawbone (a company pretty well known for their BlueTooth headsets). It isn't the one that I had planned on getting--there is another called FitBit. With UP, it comes with a bracelet that sends messages to the app on the phone. Before going to bed, I press a button to put it in nighttime mode. It's obviously very sensitive because it tracks every time I get up, or if I'm moving too much (indicating I'm not sleeping soundly). I was pretty dubious, but I've been impressed with it so far.

Speaking of sleep. . .

Good night, friends!

Only 5 posts per day will count for the contest, they must be numbered 1 through 5, no back to back posts unless 15min has past since your last post. You can post more if you like but only 5 posts count for the contest and contest entrees must be numbered. Hopefully this helps you out!
